I've had my 2000 Eddie B. for 7 years, never any real problems. When I go out to start my truck when its cold it starts normal and comes down and dies. It use to set around 750 to 550 and now it bottoms out. If I hit the gas when started it won't die. It also is alittle rough for about a min. after running. It is running lean on bank one. error 171 and I think 174

Runs and drives fine no shake once going and will start fine if not to cold.

List of items checked:
  • mas air flow
  • IAC
  • Throttle position sensor
  • plugs and wires
  • sprayed top of motor from air leaks
  • fuel filter changed
only things left that I know o2 and pcm
Thanks Its driving me crazy!

P0171 & p0174

If you have both P0171 and P0174 DTCs then both banks are running lean. If you have the SOHC V6 then you may have leaking intake manifold gaskets but you should eliminate other possible sources first.

How did you check the MAF sensor and IAC valve?

I bought new ones and checked them. I really hope its not the gasket. today it started fine it seams to be getting better but it has also been above 32 degrees when starting. thanks for the feed back.

Indeed, the most likely culprit is the lower intake manifold gaskets. Common problem, simple solution.

When i changed the fuel filter I used a can of sea foam, there were about 8 to 9 gallons of gas in the tank. Sunday I drove it around for a while it also was turned on and off over 10 times while looking at it again. Later i put new gas in. Monday afternoon getting in to go to work it started fine never dropped below 1200 rpm, lastnight leaving work with the wind and snow blowing straight into it same result didn't drop below 1200. Is there any way that it was just crap in the fuel system?

loose crud possible

It's possible that the Sea Foam loosened so much crud in your tank that it clogged your new filter but I doubt it. Personally, the only thing I put in my fuel tank is fuel and Techron fuel injector cleaner. I would never put any of it in my engine oil.

It's likely that your idle problems will return when you have a more extreme cold start situation. Mine would come and go but eventually deteriorated to the point where I had cold start idle flare every morning.

I had the same issue with my 99 Eddie Bauer. Took it to the mechanic and got the IAC valve replaced - didn't fix it. Had the MAF sensor cleaned - didn't fix it. Got new fuel filter, spark plugs, and spark plug wires - didn't fix it. Finally got the lower intake manifold gaskets replaced - picking it up this afternoon. The mechanic says that this seemed to do the trick. We'll see tomorrow morning.

Let me know if that fixed it....

Its been two weeks now since I got the lower manifold gaskets replaced and my Explorer has been running like a champ, even better than when I first got it. I'm glad that problem is done and over with.

Thanks for the quick reply.
