Hi, I have a 91 2WD X that needs a new diff. I know what I have is a 3.73 LSD on a 8.8. Im wondering if taller gears from Mustang that had a 8.8 rear end would work. This if my first attempt to find a diff (cousins friend has it). I think it has 3.55s in it, but I want to say they are taller than that. I dont know if Mustangs had LSD, but I know I want to retain mine, and I dont want taller gears. The local pick-a-part place has a few Xs, im going to go see If I can find one there with 4.10s in it. What year did they start putting rear discs on? I cant imagine anything too new would be there. Also, does anyone know about changing the diff? The local transmission shop (has my car now) wants $1500 to put ina used diff with 40k on it. They said they have to remove the whole rear end to change the diff. My cousin said theyre full of it, and I should be able to remove it just by unbolting the pumpkin. Any help is greatly appreciated. If I cant fix this myself, or locate the parts, ill have to sell it.

Gears from any Ford 8.8 should work, no matter the spline count. Traction aids for a non-Explorer will not work. However, if you're swapping the entire axle you need one out of an Explorer. 95+ have rear discs. The swap is fairly easy to do yourself. I've never messed with the driveshafts before, but that's the only part I haven't done and people say that's easy. You can do it with some decent tools and some friends in an easy day.

The truck needs a new locker. So then, am I to believe I cant just drop in the mustang pumpkin? Also, does the rear end need to be removed?

Did you locate a whole rear with a 3.73?It would be cheaper just to replace the whole rear:D

No I havent found one yet. Ive got a few people ive contacted about rear ends. Im trying to get a whole one from an explorer if I can. I could use a rear disc brake upgrade. ;)

I think that would be your best bet:D
