I know the torque rating is different between the two,
but how can I tell which trans I actually have?

The vehicle in question is an 04 Ranger Edge with the 3.0 engine.
Trans code is "D".

Most Rangers with the 3.0 have the 5R44R (I think), but
this one is 4x4 with the 8.8 rear diff, and has a factory
tow package.

Thanks for any info,
ROE

The 2004 2.3 and 3.0 used the 5R44E and the 4.0 used the 5R55E. It doesn't matter if it's 4x4 or 4x2, tow package or not.

Thanks guys, for the info.
I just bought this truck, and am trying
to learn things about it. In some ways
it's similiar to the Explorer, in others
it's not.

Mechanically, it reminds me a lot of the
old Bronco II.

Wha???? How so?

I guess it's because of the 3.0 engine. It reminds me of the
2.8/2.9 in the B2. Also the aluminum transfer case, and it
just seems to drive more like my old B2.

After all, the Bronco II and Ranger were basically very similiar
back in the eightys when they were first designed.....

new to this form, im a member at rps, but apparently no one wants to answer me, i have a 1998 ford ranger 3.0 4x2 (that is supercharged) supercab with an 5r44e/5r55e. was having trans concerns so i found a donour from a 2003 3.0 , overhauled it and installed into my truck. was working ok, but having some issues with shift quality, tim to time od light will come on. cant remember what the code was . my questions is are theses years compatible. yes there was two extra plug in's on the 03 tranny , input and output shaft sensors . was TOLD that that is ok, my pcm will not look for the signal. used the torque and valve from the 2003 truck.
