is there a difference between the 98 and 99 explorers? The reason I ask is I totaled my 99 but I am looking into buying a 98. Is there a big diff?

front bumper and all v8 explorers went to external EGR. thats all i can think of at the moment

I'll add a few things I've noticed.
- The EB models went to non-perforated leather on the seats.
- The rear cladding changed to include a plastic moulding at the bottom of the tailgate.
- Limited models dropped the unique grille in favor of a painted XLT grille.
- Front Side Airbags were not available until '99
- The fender flare style changed to one with a lip on it on 4 doors, not sure about 2 doors.
- Heated seats became available in '99
- The roof rack style changed slightly.
- I believe Limiteds started getting woodgrain center dash bezels in '99, but that may have been a 2000 change.

I looked at trading up to a '99 EB a while back. Can you tell? :p

Most of this won't matter if you're looking for another sport. They don't seem to have changed as much between those model years.

Oh yeah, and the lumbar support changed from electric to manual. You get a knob on the side of the seat instead of a switch...

Can I tell? That's more detailed than I would have ever thought of! The most major part I thought of was just the bumper in general.

Ha ha.. I guess tracking materials use in trailer plant at work is rubbing off on me. I don't miss product line changes like that anymore. :D

The funny thing is that almost none of the changes in '98-'99 were mechanical. Just a bunch of cosmetic stuff.

Mechanical: All Ford's in 1999 started using returnless fuel systems. Engine management parts related to fuel cannot be interchanged.
1999 was when the 16" wheels became standard on the Limited's, etc.

damn you people get into detail!
