i have a 91 ford explorer sport with the tranny stuck in gear i believe 3rd or 4rth ive pulled it out and went to pullapart a got another tranny but the starter was on the wrong side got it from a 97 ranger but i forgot to check what size the engine was and it was a 3.0 not a 4.0 can i just take everything out and swap the cases or should i just rebuild mine most of the parts are good in mine opened the exam top and it all looks good but it just wont pull out of gear this is the first 1 that i have done and i have been selfteaching over the last week or so trying to figure out what i should do

a 97 trans would need a computer to control it = to much work

thanks

thanks for the advice but do any of you have some about the stuck in gear part it would shift into 1st and 2nd sometimes rev and 5 but forks are at nutral and the tranny is in gear

oh another miss!!

I guess both of us missed the part of it being a standard trans.

Yea, two things I have known to happen with the m5r1, the 3-4 shift fork
(at the gears not at the selector) can break leaving it in what ever gear it was forced into.

and I've seen the input and output shafts weld together

this sounds like it may be your case ,how was the fluid you drained out?

hopfully helpfull

when i pulled the plug like a cup or two came out then i refilled it and it still didnt come out of gear and it put its self in gear when i put everything back together i ran for like 10 maybe 20 sec and it went into gear i got the forks back to nutral but the tranny stayed in gear thats when i started pulling it all apart

oh well

sounds like the bearing between the input and output shafts is siezed, you should be able to build up a good trans with the parts from your other the guts are the same as far as I know. its actually a fairly easy trans to rebuild the only pain in the a$$ is the output bearing. I had to make a special puller to remove it. after that a walk in the park. regards.

correct 1

that is the correct 1 that i have so u think that i could repair the 4.0l that i have in my explorer with that 1 from the puulapart that came out of a 3.0l

you could but a 3.0L has different gear ratio
apart from the ratio every thing else is the same

thanks every1 for all the advice

thanks for everything i will definetly be using these forums alot more
