I am putting in new gears soon.. well getting them put in, but I want to know why putting new gears in is so hard. I probably sound like an idiot but I want to know. Also, if I found axles with better gears, how hard would it be to just swap out an axle?
Setting gears doesnt take a rocket scientist, but they do take alot of patience. if ya get an axle w/ better gears, to swap it, you need to look at what brake systems are being swaped, ie: drum or disk. That can affect the swap, and the amount of work involved in a very breif overview of the axles....They are easy besides the brakes.

Taking the pinion in and out untill you get the right amount of spacing using shims. That is part of it.
It is not worth swapping in a diferent axle just if it has better gears. The axle will eventually cost more than just having your gears changed.
i would have to agree with chh777 on this one. IF you can find a complete setup for that price and is in good shape. i would think that the break line and abs sensor would attach in the same spot unless they added another circut to seperate the pressure going to each wheel but im pretty sure it would be the same. if you could find a wreked 95+ with the gears you want go for it.
Does anyone know how you can narrow down the explorer axle donor? I'm looking for the usual 8.8" (4.10, disc brakes, 31 spline). Did more of the v8 '95 and newer explorers come with this setup? Or did both v6 and v8's come with this? IS the ratio tagged on the rear end? Did both autos and standards have this axle? Thanks for any input!
8.8 came in all explorers v6 and v8 manual and auto but 95 and up came with disc brakes there should be a tag that is 4L10 or just 410 or u could look at the door sticker in the door jam and look at the axle code which would be D2 for LS 4.10 but i can't remember what the open 4.10 code is but somebody else knows it i don't know maybe this helps alittle bit
