You should not make a habit of running your tank that low, as it will scrape the crap off the bottom of the tank when low. I know in my sisters Cavalier, when the light comes on, she only has a couple of minutes before she runs dry. She only has a 4 banger too.....:)

Actually every Vehicle is different.

My Explorer as soon as the light came on I had about 45 miles. My friends has about 30 miles. After my fuel pump change about 7 miles.

The only real way would be to get a can of gas and see. Then you'll know. I wouldn't recomend it but That would be the only true way. Thats what I did. The first time.

If you deside to go that route I would change the Fuel Filter after.

Mind always has about 4.5 gallons left after the light comes on. ('99 x-cab 4x4)

Why would you get more crap with a lower fuel level? Isn't the pick-up on the bottom of the tank all the time?? I run mine as low as I can, been down to "1 mile until empty" showed on the display once. My girlfriend freaks when her car is below 1/2 tank, I just don't get it...

according to my owners manual for my 87 ranger it says mine comes on at 1/16 of a tank full, or 15 miles left to the tank or whichever comes first

Wasn't that the subject of a Seinfeld episode involving
Kramer where he and a car dealer took a test drive and
they drove the car on E to see how far they could go?
Haha...sorry guys, just thought of it when i saw this post.

Do first gen X's have this feature? I dont think my 91 EB has it, and my 89 Ranger XLT didnt have it either...

VK, of course we have it.. it is our fuel guage ;) seriously though, we dont have an extra idiot light that says that we need gas other than the guage like the second gens and up do
