No you don't but it wont hurt anything.

Try a search on modified air box. Basically they just drill a bunch of holes for better air flow.

my thinking was that the computer would relearn to breath better, w/ the new fillter.

You might want to clean your MAF while your at it. And again it can't hurt to disconnect the battery. I would.
