Greetings,

The family 92 Explorer is in the garage. I never really cared much for it, though it had some little sentimental value since we've used it for all our family outings through out the entire east coast, in all kinds of crazy weather. That was my fathers pride and joy. My father was killed in a car accident a few weeks ago (driving a Corolla), and now I find it impossible to ever rid that truck, even if someone offered me...a 2010 Ford Explorer!

**The transmission is new, kind of. It was rebuilt in 03, but then the motor started losing tremendous power a year later. I was thinking about replacing the current engine with a more updated v6. One that is more efficient, and of course has decent power. Any Advice? I guess one of the better engines in the past 8 years, or older. Should I just stick with the one I have and rebuild?

**Unfortunately, the only time we went off road was really never. We used to love going out when Snow was significant, and we used to think of that as off road; but obviously for the peeps here that's totally childs play. With that said, I would like to know if anyone has tried, or heard of doing an IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) swap. If so, please let me know! I really would like to swap out the solid axle for a smooth IRS! Please Advise!

Well shoot. Does anyone know my limitations for engines since I'm not trying to replace my Trans? I want to stick to a v6.

The transmission is automatic.

Thank you all!

Welcome to this forum! You could either rebuild your OHV engine or upgrade to the SOHC. Keep in mind that the engine management (sensors, wiring harness, etc), and transmission were controlled by a different PCM, and wiring harness. Your vehicle uses EEC-IV. Those engines were designed to run with OBD-II, and a 5R55E transmission.

Search for motor swaps, but as far as the IRS, most of us go the other way. Solid all the way.

The rear suspension on these are pretty stout if built up properly. As for engines, as someone else stated, if you want to keep the transmission in there that you have, you'll have to keep to the same 4.0L OHV. If it were up to me, and this will be happening before to long, I would upgrade to a SOHC engine with matching transmission. Not only do they have more power, but they also have better fuel economy if driven right.

Lots of potential for it, just keep looking around this forum and you'll find it.

Good luck and welcome!
