I just purchased a 1997 Ford Explorer Sport 4.0 liter. It has 83,000 miles on it. When I purchased it I was aware only 4/6 cyclinders were firing. I assumed it just needed a tune-up, but was aware it could be fuel injectors.

I have now done the tune-up, although better I still only have 5/6 cylinders firing.

The mechanic stated they ran a test and 4 fuel injectors had a 100/100 rating while the other two where 83/100 and 87/100. One of the fuel injectors is also cracked(or so they say).

I know there is a problem as I looked at the computer reports, plus I can just feel it.

How likely are the fuel injectors at fault themselves or are they just dirty and need a good cleaning. For 6 injectors it will be about $300 after paying for the injectors and gaskets, plus all the labour of installing them.

Should I just pay the money and install all 6, they are telling me STRONGLY not to replace the 2 at fault, but replace them all. Should I really do that?

Any help is appreciated as at this moment I am drinking gas for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Injectors are very easy to install yourself. I'd look into doing that. Also, $300 for six? I can get 8 for $229! Are you getting a check engine light or know of any codes its tripping?

I do have a check engine light on, but I have not gotten the code for it. I am assuming it is for either the injectors or my dead spark plug that was changed.

I am 100% sure at least 2 of my injectors are at fault. I am looking at a print out right now.

Cyl 3 - 87 Power Balance
Cyl 6 - 79 Power Balance not firing

All others are at 100. I am quoting $300 that includes the injectors, gaskets and the special tools needed. The injectors themselves are only $220 for 6.

If you can provide me with a cheaper place for 6 that will fit and they ship to Canada semi fast I am all over that.

Summitracing.com Fuel Injectors 17Lb Set 6 $173.69. They ship to Canada, right? I know they ship faaaast too!

You need 19lb injectors. Sometimes a set of 8 (for the 5.0) is cheaper than 6, guess they sell more kits for the 8.

Also, if you only replaced one spark plug, I'd replace all of them as well as the wires. I recommend Motorcraft double plat plugs and Motorcraft wires. All 3 jobs can be done in your garage with a decent set of tools. I'd also recommend checking the seal of your upper and lower intake manifolds.

No all of the spark plugs were replaced plus new wires.

Summitracing looks good. Do 19lb 5.0 mustang injectors fit? I thought they didn't.

buy the injectors and replace them yourself...not a big deal, kind of a weekend project. don't forget the new o-rings for the injectors if you choose to do it yourself

I'm pretty sure they do, but don't take my word for it ;)

Do you think it is a good idea to only replace the 2 that are faulty and not worry about the 4 that are running perfect?

I have just purchased the explorer and the money I save could really be used for other stuff such as having all of my fluids changed with synthetic.

Check eBay for some 'slightly' used injectors.

Well is it possible that 2 of the injectors are just very dirty? Could the garage have been wrong? a rating of 78/100 and 87/100 are these a sign of dirty injectors or faulty injectors.
