Has anyone ever done the diff gears themselves? If so, how hard is it, and can it be done without special tools?

You can do it yourself but will have to have the bearings pressed on the pinion shaft. Unless you have a hydraulic press around any auto shop or dealer should be able to do it for you. It cost me $10 to have it done

Yeah you can have the bearings pressed and do it yourself but you do need special tools. you also would need a very good manual. there is a reason many service manuals skip this part, a pro should do it or you should have the money to suck it up if you do it wrong. getting the proper teeth mesh pattern is critical. also endplay has a precise tolerance. if you are dead set on doing it yourself, take a day off work and go to your favorite garage and watch them do a set. learn from watching, books can only tell you so much. you don't wanna chew a new set of gears or worse everything in the diff carrier. anywya good luck and let us know how it turned out.

Hey Kevin -

How are you guys doing? Been wheeling lately? On the gearing installation, definitely take it to the pros to have it done. With all the special tools required and set-ups, it's worth the installation cost. If nothing else, it's peace of mind that it won't fall apart when you're out in the boon-dog somewhere.

BTW, it would be a great time to put in those lockers now also, if you're considering it. It'll save you on the installation cost of the lockers.

Mac,

Gears are tricky cause you have to "Blue Print" them. That is, they put this blue die on the ring and pinon gears to ensure they line up correctly and use shims to line them up. You'd be better off to just remove the
the third member yourself and bring it to a shop and pay them to do the bench work. My local Dr. Diff charged me $80 in labor and it was well worth it as I have had no problems.

Good luck.

Drew
