DO IT YOURSELF FRONT BUMPER

I am looking to replace my stock B-4000 bumper b/c it has a huge plastic fairing that hangs down w/ the turn signal lights it it and I've cracked the piss out of it. On my Exploder I just took the damn thing off but t-signals are in this one. Any of you guys know where I can get a good dual tube bumper for cheap or....

I got a mig welder, chop saw, grinder and a torch for x-mas...Santa was good to me! Oh wait! I am Santa! Anyway Shoud I tackle the bumper myself?

Any of you have pics of homemade bumper to give me some ideas?

Since you have the welder and the other stuff I'd say make it yourself. I made a bumper (I actually helped the person teaching me how to weld) and it the kind of bumper I wanted. I couldn't find anything premade that I liked that didn't cost a fortune..

Here is my bumper.. I'm going to make/move the hi lift mount to above the bumper instead of using my hi lift as a bumper for the bumper.

The bumper is made from 2"x3" square tubing and 1/8th" flat stock (for the mounts). Think of it as a dual tube bumper except the bottom tube only goes the width of the frame. This design give a great aproach angle while still giving decent protection.

Is it illegal to run with the front bumper off totally and mount the highlift where the bumper would be attatched to?
...or any other reasons why this might not be a good idea.

Check your local motor vehicle statues...They should give you all the information you need......THe local library might have them, but I can almost gaurentee that a law library will have them.

You have everything you need to make it yourself as long as you have a drill too which I am sure you do. Get in a little practice first with welding and using the torch. Of course the grinder can fix most mistakes. Check out RobbieJ's front bumper. He made it himself and it looks sweet.

I noticed you are running Yokahomma Goelander(sp?) M/T's. How do you like them? I think they are an awesome looking tire and was considering getting some when I get my next set of tires. Are they worth it?

They were a great off-road tire but they use a soft compound. We got about 25k miles out of a set of 31" tires. We now drive 50 miles round trip to work and we put more than 25k miles a year on the explorer. We now run BFG AT-KO's which are great on the highway but no where near as good off-road. We now have about 30k miles on the BFG AT-Kos and still have about half tread left.. (and thats with a rear detroit locker).

Unfortunatly Yokohama doesn't currently make a 32" version of the MT tire. If they did I would have two sets of tires, one for wheeling and one for everyday use.

The Yoko's did cost slightly more than BFG MT's would but I've used the BFGs before and would have to say that the Yokohama's work much better (I have no experience with the Moab version of the BFGs).
