well tonite my friend came over and wanted to see how my system was coming along i showed him and i happen to have my decibal reader handy (got it from radio shack for a science fair project at the time). joking around i said lets test it out. all i have right now is the 4 cerwin vega 5x7s in and the fronts are off of the 100.2 and the back to are off the 200.4. so i pop in big tymers-#1 stunna. i set the meter for a min and max for 2 mins. at the end of the time frame i get a min of 105db and a max of 111db. am im reading this wrong or is that right!? i had it right in the middle of the car laying on the center console arm rest. that to me is way to high for no sub. please lead me in the right direction on how to figure this out. is there a special eqaution i need to use. if this is true man i cant wait to get my stroker!@ I only bring this up cause that other post brought up 1 12" hitting 112db.

SPL measurements are usually taken at the passenger's kick panel. Give it a shot there.

hmmm....

just played same song for same amount of time at the pass. side kickpanel. funny thing is there is a wider range now. the min was 101 and max was 115. this is weird are you sure theres not an eqaution of somesorts i need to use? ive never had the oppruntinity to go to a show or even enter one since this is my first system so im still trying to figure stuff out as i go.

I thought it was taken on the passenger side dash next to the windshield? On the arm rest it is probably getting the high frequencies at a direct angle.

is it set to pick up only low frequencies (60Hz and down)?

Remember, sound is measured in decibels. That's all sound, not just low frequencies. You may be getting a reading on the highs also. Check your meter to see what range it picks up. You may have to set it for a certain range.

ok heres the scoop i had it on weighting C and response fast min and max for a 2 min time span. the instructions say that the C weighting measures 32-10,000hz and is for musical selections. the A weighting goes from 500-10,000hz and is for gaining an areas noise. It has a section called "checking stereo system acoustics" calls for the same thing i did accept use pure tones one at a time in intervals. should i go and try this with my bass meckanik tester cd? thxs for the help.

yeah see you are picking up high frequencies.
10,000 Hz is up in the tweeters range.
when you measure dBSPL, you're only supposed to measure 60Hz and down.

Yep, use the CD.

By using the test tones, you will measure the SPL of the bass, since that's all that's coming from the speakers. Try that and then you'll get an accurate SPL.
