'97 Ford Explorer XLT 5.0
 ok, so i was noticing a little bit of a rattle out of my 97 sohc, and remembered reading a while back that a bad timming tensioner would make that noise, so i call the local ford stealership and they quoted me at 1600 for the front and back, and 1300 for the front. Now that sounds like WAY to much for that. Hes like "well looks here we have to take apart most of the motor to get at them, i said buddy, there are people that change the front one with the motor in place, and hes said, well, this is what im quoted at." What should the right price be? And is that in fact a bad tensioner? I dont want to bend a valve or anything, but for 1600, i could get a newer motor and out it in. What do you think, or is this really a problem. I clecked my vin # at ford.com, and it said it had not outstanding recalls, so idk! Thanks for any help?

It doesn't have to actually be a timing tensioner though. Try looking at the belt tensioner and the harmonic balancer to see if they lope or turn oddly or out of round. I had a Corsicca that the balancer so out of round it knocked like the motor was ready to blow up. Turned out I ended up having to chizzel off the knotch that keeps the tensioner from going back but so far and after that it was quiet as a library mouse whisper.

How do i go about doing that? Ive never heard of that before?

Remove your serpentine belt, and start the truck. If the problem is in your belt tensioner, the noise should go away. If the problem is in the timing chain tensioners, the noise will still be there.

Will the truck even start with out the belt? And you think it could be my belt tensioner. I have to take my belt off this weekend to change the altenator. soo ill check then!

if your changing the alt and the belt you might want to replace the tensioner too depending on mileage..
at about 150,000 mine decided to releave its self of duties while on the express way ( bearing went out pulley fell off belt came off drove to nearest gas station)
Yes the truck will start and drive without the belt. but not far since no water pump.

Yes the truck will start without the serpantine belt but it won't like it. You shouldn't get an error code though because it has to record the same occurance in 2 seperate operating times to report it as error. Don't let it run long though because it could run hot on you.

Ok thanks. Ok, now i have an even bigger problem.. I call 2 ford dealerships, one had no idea WTF he was doing and quoted me the 1600. I called another one, and told him what i heard, and he said it could be the jackshaft cassette? He said the tensioner would run me about 500, and the jackshaft would run me 12-1500 bucks. He said if i hear the rattle on the left bank, its the tensioner, but i hear it in the middle on top of the motor. Im having it lookde at on monday by the dealership for free, and then im gonna call someone else to do the job probly. But this rattle is new, and it scares me cause i have 131000 on the clock, and really dont want to jump the timming and bend a valve. WHat do you think it is, and do you tink its safe to drive on it till monday because i styill need to go to work and school and what not. I might use my 5.0 over the weekend once i replace the alternator. Thanks, this is becomming a PITA! Big time.

Bump, Please. I really need help, life and death here!

The rattling may very well be the alternator--or tensioner-idler for the belt--
Try the serpentine belt off trick, run the engine . It should only take 20 seconds

ok, thanks!

ñòóKýçrÕôK, what code gets set with the serpentine belt off?

97greenmonster, you can safely start and run your truck for a few minutes with no fears. You will not have any coolant flow or alternator, so don't do it very long. It shouldn't take but a few seconds to determine if the problem is internal to your engine or not.

hi, ford qouted this money for changing chains, cassetes and tensioners. I had the same problem with my '97 SOHC (rattling when idle and start). I changed only tensioners (one is sold in a kit 00M12 - front) and rear cost no more than 150 USD and 4 hours of work altogether. After changing tensioners, motor is quiet, no rattle. If you have detailed question send me a message

Alternator code maybe?? A/C unit. Power steering pump. Everything on that truck of mine looks like it's monitered. Would assume those are too. I know the A/C uses a relay to engage/disengage. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong please. I aint quite as fresh on Fords as I was years ago. The 96 Explorer I bought the other day is the first Ford I've owned in 12yrs I think.

AH, well, i changde the alt. but forgot to try the belt thing becaus ei was in a hurry, its cold and i just got done, i started at 8:30 got done at 9:45, the rattleing is not gone. i made an appointment at a ford dealer to have it, LOOKED at, and then im going to take it to a private shop to have it fixed because i dont have the pacients, time, tools to do it right. Thanks for all your help guys, ill let you know whats wrong!
