Ok, I would like to get some info on the Best kits to swap in the T-5 to my 92 Navajo. I know of several companies that make the kits, but what I want to know is about the output shaft and tail housing. My goal is to get a t-5 in with out modifing the floor to locate the shifter 3-4" back(it is too close to the console as it is).

I am Pretty sure I am Going with the www.suspensionconcepts.com bell housing but should I go with there kit to mat the t-case?

Kris,

Why are you converting to a T5? Are you having problems with your current 5spd?

The 5-speed still works it has been hard to shift when it is hot for over a year. I hate messing with it. It is just something I want to do. It just one of the weak links in the driveline and want some thing stronger.

Come on Guys someones had to have done this before...

How about an NV4500 w/Atlas II !?!?!?!?!?

Advanced Adapters must make an adapter for this.

Advanced adaptors does not make a bell housing for the 4.0 at all. The only bolt up swap for the 4.0 I know of is a t-5 and I cant take the car down for a 5.0 swap at this time. After I get the t-5 I might consider a atlas II. But I will have to save my pennies for that one.

So far the only bell housing I have found is:

www.suspensionconcepts.com
&
www.jamesduff.com

But the James duff one is not out yet. They told me at least a few month till it is ready.

brianb or brian9 did the advance adaptors kit using the 2.9 bell housing. its the same bolt pattern but you have to do some kind of mod to the bh to use the stock slave cylinder. (one of the crappiest componets on the ol'mazda tranny) i would call advance adaptors and see what kind of information you can get out of them. they know that we explorer and navajo owners hate our trannies. there has been some rumor that they are developing a kit for the 4.0. oh and your comment on the shifter too far back as it is....well 4" isnt that much and you will have to get a shifter that is more strait up and down than the stocker. take closer look at it and see how much it really slopes back.

Suspention concepts bell housing does not use the stock Slave cylinder. It uses a Corvette slave and a Mustang clutch disc. I thought about the fixing or making the stick to be more in the stock position. I am Waiting on Seeing what the James duff kit will be like.

The T-5 is Home and in my closet where it will sleep till I get all the adaptors and parts at which time I will take it to my tranny guy and we will rebuild it to fit my BW 13-54.

What ratio?

Hi Kris; what 1st gear ratio did you get. I know the highest is 4:1. Too bad they don't offer a truck version of this trany with a 5+:1. That way you'ld be getting the advantage of a stronger trany and a greater crawl ratio.

The Tranny I got will not work so I am About to sell it and start looking fo rthe Right tranny again.

T-5 Tranny swap

Kris, the bellhousing I got came from Advance Adaptors and so did the T-5, modified bearing retainer and transfer case adaptor. Everything bolted up pretty easily except I had to make a new plate to fit on the the transfer case adaptor to mount the manual transfer case linkage to. I can say it is the best modification I have made. If you want a parts list and more details just email me or do a search on here as I have posted it before. Advance Adaptors also told me some time ago they are working on a kit for this as I told them there was alot of interest. The NV4500 would probably be overkill and would require other driveline modifications. Advance Adaptors also includes a slightly straighter stick and even though it is a few inches further back it does not interfere with my console. Also though the slave cylinder I am using is the same as the Mustang Cobra and I have have had no problems evenwith alot of hard take offs.

Parts list I would love to have. I really really want it.

Kris,

Here is my old post listing what I did and parts. Hopefully this helps.

There were really no other mods needed except for altering the access plate in the floor and moving the the shift boots back some. Your best bet is to buy some sheet aluminum, thick rubber sheeting, and fabricate a new access plate and sound deadening cover that fits the new position of the shifter. Do you have a manual transfer case or the push button shifter? If you have a manual one you will need an adaptor mounting plate for the linkage. I have a machinist who made me one out of billet aluminum along with getting a longer large bolt for the linkage and he can make you one for a reasonable price or I could get the dimensions and draw you a diagram of what it needs to look like. You should talk to Scott or Vic at Advance Adaptors if you can as they are the ones who helped me. The whole kit is essentially identical to the 2.9L setup. If your not sure just measure the overall length of your tranny from the front of the bell housing to the back of the transfer case and then check the AA literature as it gives AOL (actual overall length)this will tell you if the whole thing will be the same length as your stock set up. If you have the pushbutton shifting this is a completely easy installation. Let me know if you have more questions.

By the way here are the list of parts I bought:
Part# Item

27-1002 WC T-4 trans to Bronco/87/kit with trans case adaptor part# 15-803 (includes adaptor and spud shaft for tail of trans to transfer case), modified bearing retainer for hydraulic throwout bearing Part# 716240, special clutch disc FMD002 , hydraulic throwout bearing FITZ7564A, belhousing adaptor plate part# 712542, and bellhousing with starter opening on drivers side (check which side yours is on as they do vary sometimes) part# E8TZ7505A, new pilot bearing and retaining bolts supplied with kit

20-0021 T-4 5th gear addition for overdrive

All this came from AA, but you can get the Ford parts like the bellhousing from a junk yard or dealer.

Good Luck,

If you have more questions email me direct and we can talk on the phone if necessary.

Brian

Do you have the Part number for the stick that is straighter. The onlly problem I see with the Advanced adapor kit is the linkages for the manual Transfer case. I do have a Manual Transfer case. I know that the suspention Cocepts one has the place for the linkages already. I am Also waiting on the Kit that James Duff it having made to do this Swap.

Stick part #

There was no part # that I know of it was included with the tranny. You could probably order it through AA. Making the mount for the transfer case linkage is no big deal you just need a piece of bar stock to drill two new holes in and a couple of bolts to mount it to the holes in the AA adaptor.

Did you get your Transmission form Advance Adaptors? Or was this a stock Shifter?

Stick shift

I purchased the whole thing from AA.
