I have a problem with our 2005 ford explorer , the dome light / temp knobs on the ceiling between the driver and pass seats has broken loose and I need to know how does it come apart to repair ?
I tried to take it apart but it seems like there is no way into it .

Welcome aboard!! :salute:

Is the console falling down or just the controls?

Can you please post a picture of the affected part? It will be a lot easier to diagnose with a picture. :)

It is the console that is falling down it has the dome light, heat and ac control knobs all built into it , I will try and get a picture , I may have to get one of my kids to help me do this .

I have the '02 and my console is secured with a screw in the garage door opener compartment and tabs up front.

Here is my console.

  • Red arrow points to the Garage Door Opener Holder
  • Yellow arrow points to the Sunglasses Holder
  • Green arrow points to the Rear Climate Controls
  • White arrow points to the Front Dome Light

To remove the console: open the Garage Door Opener Holder and remove the screw indicated by the red arrow:

Then pull down on the front of the console at the points indicated by the red arrows:

Here is a thread for a removing a different style console: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=294316

Hope this helps out. :biggthump

Great pictures, ok ours does not have the sun glass holder instead we have a sunroof control there . the knobs are the same (fan control a/c & heat) .
I did try and pop the cover off the plate that has the sunroof button and tried the front with the control knobs , but I was afraid to put to much pressure on it did not want to break it totally off , the covers would not budge I know there is a simple way to get it off I just haven't figured it out . thanks for taking the time to answer my questions and buy the way our console just has the knobs and sunroof control and that's where it stops .

Check out that link I posted. I think that's a different type of console.
