I did not lose my keys, but my truck only came with one set. I was able to get a second remote out of the salesman, but he would not make another key. I went today to have one made, and holy bat juice was it expensive. It was $168 for the key, plus I had to wait an hour. Word of caution never loose your keys.

Or at least never lose more than it takes to maintain 2 working keys. As long as you have 2 you can program additional ones yourself.

True, by the way, does anyone know how to do that? This is more a curiosity thing for me.

You could have gotten the key at ebay and just pay for cutting/programming to save some $

My second key was under $60, not to rub it in. I did the usual research and it saved me a few bucks.

I was lucky when I bought mine, I got 2 keys and 1 fob. I made the salesman give me another fob though. After seeing this I'm glad I had 2 keys.

Check around with the local locksmiths. Some have the programmer and can do this for a faction of the cost.

Tried that. I was told that you needed two keys to get it done.

It was a tough pill to swallow, but I look at this way. If I had lost the one key then it would have cost way more to get everything sorted out.

So. Now that you have 2 keys, are you going to take a chance again?
Or are you going to get a 3rd key and reprogram it now.
With a 3rd key now, if you lose one, you can reprogram yourself (since you'll still have 2).

No, only one key is needed and it will reprogram both keys so you have a set.

walmart has the key and programs for under 50 bucks,

next time I would buy a blank key from ebay for 15 bucks, and have it cut and programed at walmart for probably 30 bucks

He was correct. you need to OEM keys. it doesnt even work with a "spare" made off of the 2 original keys.

Process for programming the keys is VERY simple if you infact have 2 OEM keys.

1. first factory key turn in to the on position (do not start) wait for the light (red led in the center) on the top of the dash to go out, turn key off
2. repeat with 2 factory key
3. take your new key and do the same. after this its programmed.

you have to be quick with the keys. you cant let more then 5 seconds pass between steps. However do not have both OEM keys on the same ring. this can throw the bcm off and it can see both chip frequencies and possibilly delete both.

i would do this all the time for remote starters before bypass kits were around. only the first gen pats keys you only need 1. From i think about 2002 on this is the method (depends on the model of ford).

a good locksmith will have the hardware to program an additional key, no need to have 2, you only need 2 if you want to program in the method that arjona posted above. Didn't know that walmart provided the service for free, I'll check it out next time I go, I got 2 blanks from ebay, I paid like 30 something for both with shipping included...

$89 for spare key and remote at my Ford dealer. They immediately programmed it for free, but hinted they could have charged me $50 for the programming.
