Hey everyone. Having a pretty serious issue here. Me and my friend were on our way to the junkyard when my explorer started acting funny. I can off a red light and lost all acceleration. It felt like I was running on four cylinders. So towed it back to my mechanic and I've hooked it up to the OBD scanner and pulled up 11 codes. The codes were P1747, P0755, P0743, P0340 ( which has been on since I got the vehicle), P1451, P0135, P0141, P0155, P0161, P1409 P1309, and P1000. My mechanic sent me to the nearest exhaust shop and got my cats replaced due to the passenger side being completely clogged. After that the problem still continued. So I checked the spark plugs and found out that about 5 of the 8 plugs were fouled. So I went and got a whole new set of plugs and wires. Still running bad.. Then more testing at night and come to find out that the cats were glowing cherry red. It must mean Im running rich since I just replaced them right? I don't know what the problem could be. O2 sensors are also black don't know if that could be it. Also the transmission wont shift. Its either stuck in 2nd or 1st. Somebody please help.. Need to get back on the road. Thanks!!

O2 sensor heaters

P0135 02 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
P0141 02 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2)
P0155 02 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
P0161 02 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2 Sensor 2)
P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0743 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Electrical
P0755 Shift Solenoid B Malfunction
P1000 OBD-II Monitor Testing Incomplete
P1309 Misfire Detection Monitor not enabled
P1409 EGR Vacuum Regulator circuit malfunction/Electronic Vacuum Regulator Control circuit fault
P1451 EVAP Control System Canister Vent Solenoid Circuit Malfunction
P1747 Electronic Pressure Control Solenoid - Short circuit

If the O2 sensor heaters don't work then the O2 sensors won't read correctly which impacts the air/fuel ratio. Check fuse 13 (15 amps) in the battery junction box to see if blown. The fuse also provides power to the EPC, TCC, SSA and SSB solenoids and the EGR vacuum regulator. If its blown then check to see if the wires to the sensors are against the exhaust pipes. The heat from the pipes melts the wire insulation causing a short circuit that blows the fuse.

Hey man I replaced the fuse that you talked about and its about 95% fixed. I am still getting some misfiring. It only happens on the low end. Once it gets past 3000rpm it basically jumps with full power. Going to check plugs again even though I just replaced them, and then check wires. Coil pack maybe? Do you have an idea what it could be?

clear your codes

I suggest that you clear all of the old codes, drive the vehicle, then read and post any new codes.

Did you check the O2 sensor wiring for shorts against the exhaust pipes?

Check the connector and wiring to the camshaft position sensor (synchronizer).

Ok I checked the wires to the 02 sensors and none are touching the exhaust. No when I drive the engine back fires. Went to oreillys and picked up a cam sensor since that code was there since I got the vehicle and still there so ill replace that. Im going to check the spark plugs once the engine cools down. Got 4 codes total after I cleared them the other day. I got P0340, P1000, and 2 other codes from the O2 sensors. One says running rich an the other says its running lean.

Cross connected as in put in the wrong place?

connected to wrong bank

Bank 1 is always the bank containing cylinder 1. For Explorers cylinder 1 is the forward cylinder on the passenger side. Many assume bank 1 is on the driver side and connect the bank 1 sensor to the driver side and the bank 2 sensor to the passenger side. That really "confuses" the PCM because it assumes the O2 sensors are connected correctly. It rapidly ends up with one bank being at the lean limit and the other at the rich limit. One way to determine if they are connected wrong is to disconnect the easiest one. The PCM will set a heater fault for the O2 sensor position. O2 sensors are number bank, front/rear (i.e. sensor 21 is bank 2, pre-cat).

Alright ill make sure to check that out first thing in the morning. The am sensor really helped a lot. But every once in a while it'll still sputter when I give it gas then shoot at 3000rpm. But other than that everything actually seems to be good. The o2 sensor positions can be seen on the OBD scanner right?

One bank lean and the other bank rich usually means the pre-cat O2 sensors are cross connected.

I checked all the O2 sensors and come to find out the post cat sensor were crossed. Swapped them and went on a test drive. Runs smooth as silk again. Thanks man you've helped a lot and helped me save a good amount of money!
