Hey guys! Hope everyone is having a great Monday morning!! I have open/shut all my door including the glass window and the stupid light is still on is there any way I can disarm the dash light? Or replace a sensor or something? I Literally know nothing about the explorers that’s why I need help.

First, check all your door jamb striker bolts for worn or missing bushings. It is very common for a car this old to loose the plastic bushing that goes on the door jamb sticker bolt, when this is missing the door latch does not close properly or even all the way. The plastic bushings for the door jamb striker bolt can be found in the "HELP" section in most any auto parts store.

Each door latch (hatch latches and rear window) has a switch attached to its latch. It's just a simple binary ON/OFF switch that gets triggered when the latch is closed. With age these switches can stick due to wear, dirt and lack of lubrication. Sometimes you can bring them back to life by cleaning the switch buttons and lubricating them with. Unfortunately figuring our which switch is not functioning properly is not easy. The only one that's easy to eliminate is the driver's door, because if it's not working and the key is in the ignition the key chime will go off.

Getting to the switches to clean or replace them is a PITA as each door trim panel must be removed. The switches are attached to each latch with a single Phillips screw.

I've once had a switch that was broken in two and I was able to repair it with JB Weld, but new ones are available and are not very expensive. Often just spraying them down with WD40 and exercising them will revive them.

As far as the door striker bushings, yes they must be in place for the latches to work properly. The HELP section (and even the Ford OE replacement) bushings are crap and don't last very long. I've replaced missing bushings with a piece of 1/2" PEX, which I find makes a very durable repair and a 6' section costs almost nothing and will last you forever. The OD of the 1/2 PEX is a little larger than the OE bushing and you'll have to turn them down just a little bit. I do this by mounting the PEX on the striker bolt, chucking the bolt in a drill (poor man's lathe) and by using a rasp. This gets the PEX down to the OE OD in just about 60 seconds. I use a digital caliper to measure the OD to get it just right. If you want to buy new replacement bushings buy the OE Ford bushings rather than the Dorman HELP stuff.

You guys are great, thank you by chance does anyone have any part numbers to reference?

DORMAN 38424

I don't have a Ford part number, but be advised that the liftgate bushings are a different (larger) size than the door bushings and that the older Ford bushings are a different size than the Gen II ('95-'01) Explorers. I suggest you search on eBay (eg "2000 Explorer door striker bushing")

FYI: I've had missing bushings. The door rattled and the latches were noisy when the door was closed (loud metallic click), but it never effected by DOOR AJAR light.

If the key is in run and you open the doors one by one, the chime will sound with a new door opening. When you open a door that doesn’t sound the chime, that’s the door you have an issue with. Don’t forget the lift gate window.

Good luck!

Just picked up the bushings for $9 on eBay thanks guys!

a bit late here but if you have the odbII dongle thingy (i use a bluetooth one) and the torque app on your android phone ( not sure if it is available for iphone though, sorry) you can get the extended ford codes and it will actually tell you which door is the one that is open! it highlights L/F or R/F etc if it is on an open position.

why oh why ford could not have just included this picture on all models, (like my mother is laws '92 lebaron did!) but there we go, there has to be a reason to buy the premium models right?

honestly though it probably is just as easy to go round the car and check all the doors, but wanted to throw out a technocologicalistic solution too :D

I found out what it was I didn’t shut the tail gate hard enough!

happens on mine all the time, gotta say the old lady does like a good slamming these days.

probably should do something about it, but its only an issue if i have been driving another car which does'nt require so much rough and tumble *LOL*
