I'm a newbie to this board, but i'm hoping you all can help. I read some threads about the door, but i need some specifc help. I have two problems:

1) I live in New England and the driver's side door was frozen shut this winter. My boyfriend tried to open it and ended up ripping off the door handle! I was going to order a new handle online. I found this one (http://www.1aauto.com/1A/DoorHandleExterior/Ford/Explorer/1ADHE00178/141864)
Can someone tell me if this is easy to replace or should I bring it to the dealer? Since my boyfriend ripped it off, he was going to install, but i don't want to ask him to if it's not a simple job. If it is, does anyone have some instruction?

2) Also the same door....I just had the window replaced because the glass broke but the guy installing said some scissor-like piece needs to be replaced. (Honestly, the window hasn't worked for a while, but I needed to replace the glass!) He suggested taking to a dealership to replace, but again, not sure if this is something anyone could replace with a little guidance. Any suggestions?? I'm not even sure what the name of the part is, he just said it was metal and scissor-like.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Thanks!

Tell your boy friend not to pull so hard next time :)
Skil is not the issue in both of these matters as much as tools.
For some dumb ass reason Ford LOVES to use " big daddy " rivits.
The door handle and the window regulator are both held on with " big daddy " rivits, and you would need a large rivit gun to compleate both of these tasks.

The door handle is pretty easy, the window regulator does take a little bit of finesse though.
Truth be known, I would take it to the dealer.

I had to replace my door handle this year as well. Instead of using the rivits, I was able to just use bolts.

Is there something that can be applied to the door gaskets to aid in preventing this sort of thing from happening? Both doors on my Sport seemed to be frozen (at the top of the doors) the other morning. Instead of ripping off the handle though, I caught the edge of the drivers door in the face instead pulling on it so hard! I had tried using a rubber protectant product on the gaskets some months back but it didn't seem to make any difference.

Barry

after just replacing the drivers door actuator on my 1998 4 door Eddie Bauer, I determined that it was not the root of my problem. In my case the two spings that keet the exterior handle taught, both broke. This lets the exterior handle loose which in turn messes with the catch/ lock mechanism. I just ordered a new handle fromn Ford for $36.00. My only concern is that while they needed the color to order they advised that the handle might need to be painted. I am keeping my fngers crossed.

Just read a a couple of earlier threads. It looks like when a spring breaks in either the handle or in the locking mechanism then the door lock on the door wil mal###tion/ not work. From what I could tell the cost for a dealer repair seemd to be about $70-100. out the door.

Picked up the handle at the ford dealer $32 and it was already painted medium wedgewood blue. I guess that if they still have painted ones in stock your in luck. Now I need to handle the installation. I asked the dealer about the cost to install and they quoted me $130 just for labor!!!!!.

Looking to try replacing myself.

same problem with the drivers door handle springs broken. I bought a new one and it has to be painted. comes red primer. no aftermarket paint for my color. painted it black and will paint the others .
tried to install but can't get the hooked latch rod out of the yellow plastic gromet. already drilled out the rivets and was going to replace with bolts too.
anyone with ideas on getting the old one off and the new one on with the J-hook in the rod? thanks

Had time to read more, and found plenty of info on doing this. Unclip rod at lower end first! Thanks if anyone was thinking about this. :)
