do the caps/ rivets onthe top of the pin need to be ground off/ removed somehow to tap the pin out? 1994 explorer.

It's been ten years since I did mine, but I remember them being just like a door hinge in your house, they tap/pull upwards.
If you are replacing them with new ones, sure, you could just remove the head and drive them down.
