Door locks unlocking themselves... Anyone else???

My doorlocks are unlocking themselves. I lock the door and wait. Then the domelight comes on and then the locks unlock!! I have tried disconnecting the remote lock system and it still happens. I took it to Ford and they replaced some relays. The problem stayed away for a couple of months and now it is back. It seems to be related to wet weather.

Has this happened to anyone else??? What could the possible solution be??

I have a co-worker who has the same problem but it is not with an Explorer. He found it related back to truckers driving by while on their CBs. Something about the frequency they were on causing interference in the locks. Funny thing about it, his car does not have remote control locks. He found that if he does not park close to the highway, he does not have that problem.

Unfortunately, I don't think that is the problem here. It has occurred pretty consistently at home, work and various places either near a freeway or in the country.

The first thing that popped into my head when I read your post is the key-fob remotes. Have you ever come back to your Explorer and found the doors unlocked, or does this only happen when you are there. I should probably ask if you have the key-fob remotes? If you do, either leave them home or take the batteries out and see if maybe one of them has a bad button that intermittently makes contact and unlocks the doors. Just a thought. Hope this helps.

Oh, when Ford replaced relays, did they say they found bad ones or were they just throwing parts at the problem?

It is possible that the buttons are making contact. Do you have an aftermarket car phone installed? Or a CB or CD Changer? Anything electronic that didn't come on the truck could be the culprit.

I know where you are going... I thought the same thing.

I completely disconnected the remote alarm/locking system, and removed the batteries from both key fobs. It still unlocked itself. It would do it when I was standing there and when I came back hours later.

Ford said that they found a code when they checked the car. The code instructed them to replace the relays. They also said that the code went away when they replaced the relays. Also, when I picked up the car, they said that they could not be sure if that was the problem. They had difficulty finding the source of the problem. I still think they were throwing parts at it. I just don't know what to do. I can only take it back to Ford to see if they can fix it. Unfortunately, the last fix was over 30 days ago, so this time it will cost me again.


Oh, I also tried disconnecting the power door lock switches to see if they were bad. I do have an aftermarket stereo in the car, but it doesn't share any ciruits with the door locking system.

Damn, thats weird. As far as I know, relays dont leave codes in the computer. I really don't know what to tell ya pal, good luck!

I think it probably is your switches in on the doors.I heard of them getting weak and making contact on there own I hope you find your problem.

I will try to check my door switches again, but I already disconnected them all once. The doors still unlocked themselves.

I am having the SAME problem with my 96, how did you fix this, PLEASE I AM GOING CRAZY HERE.

I checked the relays, they are fine I think, someone mentioned the GEM could that be it??

The GEM controls all of your power systems like power window, and locks. It could be bad, and mal-functioning. I would say get this replaced or test to see if it works.

The GEM is supposed to be behind the radio right?? All I see is a black box with what looks like a circut bord inside to the left of the radio (behind it), is this the GEM, how do I know if it is bad?? Looks like I'll have to remove most of the dash (gauge cluster) to get it out if this indeed is the GEM.

Don't know if the same thing could happen on one of these newer ones, but my BII had possessed power locks once. After tracing wires and such, found that it was caused by a wet electrical connector near the battery. The water on the connector was shorting out the power lock circuit causing the locks to repeatedly lock and unlock. Fixed itself after the connector thouroughly dried (took a day or two). Maybe?
