Hi,

The upper vertical door trim on my '98 sport between the door and side passenger window has faded badley and looks like crap, I had the same issue with my 91 Mustang LX 5.0.

What type of paint is used to repaint this? This seems to be a common problem for Explorers.

Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Here is what I used on the trim around the back window of my F-150. Worked great, I masked everything up, dropped a cloth drop cloth over the truck and prepped the plastic piece as follows: Rubbed it down with acitone, light sanded with medium steel wool, rubbed back down with acitone, allow to dry off for about 10 min, spray a mist coat, wait a min or so, spray a full coat, wait about 5 min, spray a final coat. Let sit for an hour and you are good to go. It will look like new after that.

Here's what I did since i had a week of vacation that time:

I just used regular Dupli-color automotive rattle cans for my faded rear window pillars. Sanded them down till I saw primer and bare metal, started with 800 grit then sprayed with filler primer then sanded down again with 800 sprayed with sandable primer (get the dark one close to black in color) sanded smooth with 800 then started with the base color which is black letting each coat to have ample time to dry to touch but still a bit tacky, then lightly sand down with 1000 grit to take out any rough imperfections. i finished 1 can for both pillars since i wanted to have a thicker coat. Let the last base coat dry for 30-45 mins then sand it down smooth with 1000 grit and start spraying your clear coat with the same drying intervals and sanding procedures with the black base coat. Let the paint fully cure for 3-4 days and then color sand that newly painted pillar to a smooth mirror like finish.

It's been a long time since i did mine and it still looks like new and way shiny. Spent around $16 and 4 hours of prep paint and clean-up.

Although this rattle can method is not recommended to restore large surface areas like hoods, door panels, and the like. But it works well with small surfaces and trims.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all of the help...

03Mach1 what product? you did not mention the product that you used.

Sorry I forgot to include the link. This is what I used only because I had it on hand. There are alot of different companies that make a "Bumper & Trim" paint. Just go to Pep Boys, Auto Zone, or any of the other chains and you will find something that will do the trick. Just stick with a quality paint i.e. Bodo, Dupont, ect and you will be ok.
