I tied a strong string onto the spring hook, and fed the string through the latch asy. Then with the one end already hooked in position, I pulled the string on the other end until it hooked. You might need a small screwdriver to help guide the spring hook while you're pulling with the string. Then I just cut off the string and reassembled everything.

Brilliant! i'm going to try that. i have some really strong string i use for "string lines" when putting up fence. its bright pinkish, i think its for brickwork or something.
