i know the 2nd gen ex's came with a double piston caliper setup on the front. ive heard that these calipers are a bolt on swap into a 1st gen. i was looking and i idk about that, they attach to the axle differently. does anyone know more or can link me to a thread?

I dont think its a direct bolt on. The 1st generation used the more archaic rubber wedges design where as the 2nd gen uses the more modern floating bolt/pin design.

1st gen:

2nd gen:

You have to swap spindles from a 95-97 Ranger onto your Explorer. Then you can get the dual piston calipers, and better caliper mount.

that makes sense. those pics are very helpful too. are those ranger spindles the same size to fit in a 4x4 ex? and then from the spindles out, new hardware? ball joints, knuckles, ect right?

you will need new rotors, the offsets are different also

Rotors from the same Ranger you're getting the calipers & spindles from.

will this work on my 4x4? also, will the bolt pattern match up for my wheels (theyre stock)?

Yes. It will work on the 4x4 also....95-97 Rangers is the only years it works with though.

thanks guys, got enough info (i think) to start doin something about my "archaic" single piston front calipers. on an unrelated note: are the rear swaybars for the 1st and 2nd gen explorers the same size, as in will they accept the same size bushings?
