Just got my oil changed and the mechanic stated the serpentine belt was on backwards. He shined a light on the belt and I pointed out it was double sided. Both mechanics were stunned as they've never seen this before. Is this an OEM belt? I bought the vehicle used.

2012 Explorer XLT 2.0 turbo

Thanks in advance.

I doubt that a 2012 would have had a belt replaced unless it was creating a squeal or something. As far as I know, a serpentine belt uses both surfaces in turning engine components so I can't understand how it can be on 'backwards' unless it has a patterned grip. But then I'm not a mechanic.

ok, looks like there's nothing to worry about. Thanks!

LOL! I had that happen to me years ago. I brought my '97 VW Passat GLX VR6 in for a state inspection to a local Firestone shop. After 45 minutes of inactivity in an empty shop. I inquired as to why it was taking so long to get my car inspected. They asked me which car I had and I said the Green VW. They said they found an issue. I went out with them to my car to find it up on the rack. The Tech did and said the same thing. He said my belt was on upside down as the teeth were against a smooth tensioner wheel. I looked at it and gave it a simple twist and saw that it too had teeth on both sides. I then said to the tech "What side is suppose to be against the pulley?" as I twisted it so he could see! He looked at me and didn't say another word as he let my car down and put my sticker on the windshield!

I never went to back to that place!

Hey!! You can't fix stupid!!

I think I would have been perplexed too. I don't remember ever seeing a double-sided belt. But thanks to this post I have now.
