How old are the plugs/wires? The O2 sensors?

Remember its winter.

yeah... winter alone will do it. First of all, as far as I know gas companies have a winter blend that makes for easy cold starts but decreases economy. Also, when your engine is cold, guess how it keeps itself running warmer... more fuel. :-) I have a 1994 XL with the same problem. Different engine but same symptom. But yeah the plugs/wires could be wearing out, and possibly check your whole intake line, air filter, MAF, throttle body.. etc. The 02 sensors would be down on my list of things to try but not to rule out. Oh yeah, have you used your 4X4 more lately???

I'd start with the basics... air filter, tune up maintenance, tire pressures... if all that checks out, (since I figure that South Carolina winters are not as harsh as Canadian ones) I'd be interested in knowing fuel trims and such to figure out how efficiently your engine is running.

Look into an "engine flush".

When i was going to school in Rochester NY and parents lived in MD, it would take me about 1.3 tanks of gas to make a one-way trip. After the "engine flush", i made the same trip in one tank.

My parents paid for the flush and it was done at a local ford dealer - but its something liek 90 bucks - I forget exactly how much.
