What type of gas milage has everyone been getting on 2011 Explorers???

I have a LTD-AWD, approx 3300 miles on the ODO. I'm getting 19 city, and 22 highway. I have difficulty adhering to the posted limits on the hwy. ;)

First 1000 miles was break in (variable speeds). Ended up at 20.6 or so...can't remember).

Second 1000 miles was paying close attention to the instant MPG and adjusting my driving. Ended at 21.7 MPG.

Third 1000 miles, I put away the instant MPG guage...drove how I felt. I have 500 miles into it so far and am at 22.0 MPG (I looked for this post).

Pay attention to one thing I learned in the second thousand miles. Get to cruising speed (30, 40, 50, whatever), let up on the pedal just a tiny bit...and watch the mileage go up without actually losing speed. I also learned that accelerating too slow did not help my MPG. I don't hammer it, but I don't baby it too much either.

EDIT-my driving is literally 90% city...well, suburb/city. Lots of stoplights. I did reset a trip meter for a weekend where I put on some highway miles. On the highway I got a best of 25.7 when I did the light modulation of the gas pedal on a 50 mile trip (just under 70 MPH).

Edit #2-I also atribute some of the increase in MPG to the combo of being broken in, and the switch to summer gas.

LTD - AWD - 95% city driving avg after 3,200 miles 15.1 mpg

This is driving fairly calmly bc the majority of the time there is an infant in the car, what gives? Even on the hwy @ 65-70 mpg hovers around 18-19 tops. Gas around here (Houston) sometimes has 10% ethanol. Should I get this looked at?

bigzaj, I'm getting the same fuel economy you are. My fuel economy just hovers around 15 - 15.1 MPG now. I do 100% city and I go usually 25 - 45 max on the city. I have a straight uphill to where my job is and it keeps my RPMs pretty high because I'm in a lower gear for the hill. I also have crazy amounts of stopsigns. City driving kills the fuel economy. =( The ethanol too. I used to get 17 MPG before I used local gas stations with ethanol in it.

Limited 4x4. I have about 1500 miles on the clock at this point and I'm getting about 18.3 mpg on my not-so-daily commute to work. (no highway, all city and back roads). We took a small trip this past weekend with some friends to Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH and with 6 passengers plus luggage my X averaged 25.8 mpg for this Turnpike roadtrip. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the fuel economy of my new X (coming from a 08 Chevy Avalanche 4x4).

I have to say, I am VERY impressed with the fuel economy numbers I'm getting with my Ex, especially while towing.

I towed a trailer over 900 miles with my ATV on the back. Total weight being towed was roughly 1600lbs. I averaged 18.0 MPG. And mind you this was with a 74 MPH average as well. I did not have the tow haul mode on, as the Ex will not shift into 6th while tow haul mode is on.

Without towing, I'm averaging 22MPG on the highway and 19-20MPG mixed city and driving.

my 08 explorer 4.0 is getting 17 city and 20 highway. And that's with intake and cat-back exhaust.

Gas Milage

I have a 2004 Ford Explorer LTD AWD 4.6L 17-18 town and 24.6 Highway at 65mph and 18.2 at 80mph:thumbsup:

Have had my Limited FWD for four weeks. I do not have the terrain management system. Have approx. 2500 miles on it. One week after receiving vehicle, we had to pick my son up at college in South Carolina. Made the trip from NJ to SC (about 1700 miles round trip) and kept car within posted speed limits and tried to vary the speed per the owners manual. Was very pleased to get 24.9 MPG highway and averaged about 17.5 in the city of Charleston (excessive stop and go if you haven't been there). It seems to be performing as advertised. Didn't take notice of the gas used along the way (i.e. ethanol or not) but I'm happy with the car.

went to Las Vegas from Nebraska & back, mountains, some headwinds, 78 minimum mph interstate, XLT 4WD 2 adults 2 suitases about 2300 miles, averaged 22.5. Acording to that it should be real good at 70 mph, flat road & no wind!!:D

It is now a month and a half old. On the holiday's round-trip trip between Madison and Chicago I was up to 22.2. I find myself driving more carefully now in order to maximize the gas mileage.

i got about that too coming back from a road trip.

seems at though around 70mph for about 22.5 mpg. i am feeling that anywhere above 70 to 80 mph your going down in mileage to about 20mpg.

i was hoping the sweet spot was closer to 80mph but it seems as though this v-6 power seems to drop off about 80mph. my 2003 honda ody seems to have more push above 80 then the explorer. maybe the transmission and gearing/programming cause you step on the gas at highway speed to pass and it hits near redline. i only have 2000 miles on her and still getting use to the ex... but that's my early impression.

love the quietness and smoothness at lower speeds though.

I am getting an average of 18.8MPG city/highway.

2011 xlt fwd

I have beeN averaging 16/17 around town. Just took a trip from FL to NC, averaged 25.5 on the highway.

wow, 25.5 is good...
how many miles on the odometer?
what was your average speed? 65?!

took another road trip this week, now have 8000 miles on her & this trip was at mostly 68 mph. Averaged 24 & better by the pencil, less if you go by the computer. 4WD XLT, mostly flat terrain with little wind, had a 30 plus tail wind on on leg that I seperated out, it was 26.7

we have an '11 XLT FWD with about 4,300 miles. Average in town is about 19 MPG and 23-24 on highway, depending on driving conditions

XLT, 4.6, 2wd, 138000 miles.... I get 19 to 23 mpg depending on how hard I push it.

I got 21.6 this past week on the highway. Went from Griffin, Ga to N Ga moutians for a Class III Gun Shoot. Nothing less then 75 mph most of the way

What do you mean you do 100% highway? Usually to me that means freeway or open road outside of cities. But then you say you have a crazy amount of stop signs and 25 to 45 mph travel. That would usually be city driving.

I chuckled at Bill #4's comment, until I remembered this thread Torque Steer Severe Today where you said you accelerated as normal after a stop. Sure you don't drive just a little harder than most? I experience 0 torque steer, but then I have 4wd, so it might be a little different, but not that much.

I have a 25 miles commute each day with a mix of open highway, stop and go highway, and a couple miles of city. I'm averaging just under 20 mpg over the week.

When towing the 7X14 enclosed V-nosed trailer (1,900 pounds empty) last weekend, the onboard fuel economy said I was getting about 12 mpg. Not bad for pulling a big brick.
