I read that someone had their airbox drilled. Is this a good thing to do? What are the benefits and downfalls.

Are there any other easy mods that a backstreet mechanic like myself can do that is worthwhile. My X is all factory now but I'm feeling in the mood.:p

A drilled airbox allows more to the filter but will never approach the effeciency of a cone open filter such as the KKM ot K & N.

Good luck......

I am thinking about drilling my airbox as well, but the only thing I am worried about is water and mud getting into the system. Most of my off-roading is near the ocean and in deep mudd puddles. Would this kill my engine if I had a drilled airbox and a K&N?

at least when your airbox is drilled it allows sucked up and splashed in water to escape, where it wont otherwise. what about all your breather tubes, have you got them extended so that deep puddles wont casue problems?

Ajevenson, When you drilled your airbox did you notice a difference? I was wanting to do it but someone in another thread told me not to waste my time.
You at least have it on a model with the same body as mine so you can speak from experience.
Would you do it again? If so, where did you drill?

I keeep quite detailed information on my truck so that I know what mods work and which ones dont. Drilling doesnt overly affect city driving cus you're sucking hot air from the engine cavity, but the highway driving is affected. City went up .5MPG average and highway went up 2MPG. Both these averages are based on the 2500mi I have driven since drilling. As far as where I drilled, I drilled the lower airbox with as many 1" holes as I could get on all sides as well as a couple in the bottom to let sucked up water drain out.

did you notice anything else onthe highway besides 2 more mpg?

As long as there is a little foward motion ( even slow city driving ), the intake air temperature is not mich higher than the outside temp.

It's has been determined by monitoring the intake air temp with an OMD II scanner in various driving conditions.

Not sure I understand that. As far as noticing anything else, I wouldn't say that there has been a huge increase in acceleration. It is a little better, more noticable when trying to pass on the highway in 3rd gear.

i think i got this little idea off the ranger forum....
some guy there said

take the bottom of your air intake box out, and leave the top of the filter box on, take your air filter, and strap it securely to the top of the air filter box, and bam!

That sounds like it would work. Any Ideas on what to strap the filter up with?

zip ties most likely , possibly a few hose clamps

whats up
I just put a k&n rplacement filter on, ripped out the air box, and squeezed the heck out of the round clamp thingie so it would keep my filter on, its definitely louder now, gas mileage got a bit better, i dont know about hp, i still lose to minivans,( not that it matters, it isn't a speed demon anyways)

I've been running a cut airbox for sometime now. I got the idea from another member years ago. The airbox on my '91 is a real box. I virtually cut all the walls out of four side and epoxied fiberglass screen over the openings. I've been using it with K&N flat filter. I think the thing I noticed the most with this mod is additional passing power on the freeway in addition to the slight increase in mpg. Hope this helps.

Drilled Box

I've got a 94 4x4 4.0 OHV. I drilled the box a couple of days ago. Took about 20 minutes to pull the box out put 10 1" holes in the sides and put it back in.

I can hear the intake noise more and seems to have a tad more response. I'll be driving mega-miles starting about 10 days from now and I'm hoping to pick up a coupla' mpgs.

I let you all now about highway results...

Paul

I got my K&N on weds. and installed it that night, I drove it thurs and noticed just a hair better response and acceleration. Thurs. night I got out the drill and went to work!! I used a 3/8 bit and put just a little over 50 holes in it spaced out evenly around the housing. I noticed a dramatic difference in acceleration and highway passing. The only other parts of the enging that are not stock are the Bosch wires and plugs (Platnums), so I am sold on the value of the K&N filter!!

that would actually be better. you would have less of a chance of taking in water. the stock setup draws in air from a lower location behind the headlight.

how do u take out the air intake collection box out on my 98 x

cant find any screws or bolts

If it's like mine, there are two or three plastic studs that are just pushed into the metal mount attached to the fender. I used a large flat screwdriver under it to pop it out of the mount.
