I know several people on here have drilled their airbox to allow more air into the engine instead of buying an aftermarket kit. What have the results been? Have you have a noticable MPG increase, or power increase? Has any noticed any ill effects from it intaking the warmer engine compartment air?

I have a KKM and I did notice a slightly more power when you floor the pedal. MPG probably increased as well but I sure couldn't tell. Now this is an OPEN filter, imagine what kind of gain you will have just having holes in your air box! Plus its fugly and ghetto looking! Don't do it man.

Do it right with KKM/K&N or just leave it alone. :)

I may do it, they don't cost as much as I thought they did. How do they affect emissions? We have some pretty tough emissions testing here in Maryland.

I don't like how cleaning the filter isn't just as easy as buying a $4 filter and popping it in.

Also how would the performance of just drilling the airbox compare to aftermarket?

im not sure but doesnt yours have the actual box?

if it does take the box out and knock the silencer off. Then take a dremel tool and widen the hole out to be about 4" wide and 2" tall then drill 1 or 2 hole in the lowest parts of the boxes bottom to allow any moisture to get out. the best thing is you cant even tell it has been done when you finish.:D

i cut the lower half of the front of my airbox out. from the top of the original hole down. i also have the k&n drop in filter. no noticable performance gains, just piece of mind.

What I'm refering to as the box is the Cylinder where the air filter is housed. Not a box filter like the older Explorers had. Is that not the correct terminology?

drilling holes in the airbox works good until you get into water that is to high. then it lets to much water in and you drown out and lockup your motor. i when with the knn air system and closed off the old airbox. engine are to costly to have to repair or replace.

I second the suggestion of getting a KKM filter' you will not regret it.

I liked the loud intake sound....not much performance though.

hey arnie i am takng a trip to your town tomorrow for a concert.

the drilling airbox well i just cut some large squares out of the sides of the BOTTOM half of the air box. I cut only the sides that face the fender and front of the truck. That way i minimize the hot air that is sucked in. its louder i know that much, not too much gain....might help if i had a k&n drop in....:)

Be careful EliteConcept, we're supposed to get some really crappy weather here tomorrow!

arnie thanks for the heads up i'll have to make sure i watch the weather and allow for extra time if needed...

thanks man

i took out my airbox and i noticed allot more power and mpg increase i have 32 inch tires now and the mpg was worse after i got them than i took out the air box and i have the same mpg as i did before the new tires.

Thanks guys. I think I've decided I'm going to go with a KKM filter when funds permit since they are only about $90.

OMG! I rest my case. I'm sorry. :o

Hey! I put a lot of time and effort in to that POS airbox :D

...notice the electrical tape holding it together?...

Oh the electrical tape part is awesome. The technique that you use to hold it together is unsurpassed. ;) :D

Notice the artistic quality of those cuts that are made to look like a poor job. They are so good I almost didn't catch that they aren't real. ;) :D
