The filter might not be so messy on the 5.0 if the front was level, but it's not worth jacking the back up when the front is up on my ramps. I also find that it's often frustrating finding just the correct angle to get the 5.0 oil filter to screw on.
I am lucky that my driveway is angled exactly like my ramps, so I back up the Explorer on the driveway and then down on the ramps. Now is level, with enough space in front for me to access the pan.
And yes, that filter nipple angle is so weird, never "takes" from the first turn.
