I am gona pull my hair out!

My 98' sport has that slip yoke clunking again and again and again. I have been living with lubing my slip yoke every other oil change and then finally ever oil change and finally I amde the dealer swap in a new driveshaft at they're cost for me only to go 6k and start feeling again, so now I am back to lubing it every other oil change.

This is unacceptable!

What can I do?

Are there any aftermarket shafts that are designed better?

Are there any mods that work?

Can I use a new shaft like from a 2000 or 2001? <- my girls two sports didn't have these problems!!!

At my wits end

Is it Clunking because The 'U' Joint is bad?

Is you 'X' at Stocl height or is there Suspension Lift on it?

Ride height is stock, and the clunking goes away after the slip yoke is lubed, it is the frequency that I have to do it that is a problem. It's basically due to poor design or specs not close enough in tolerance which means bad production.

It puzzles me that you swapped it out and still have an issue. That's why I thought you may have the truck lifted beyond the 'U' joint's capability.

I also had a slip yoke problem but the lubrication has lasted over 10,000 miles and I'm still good. You need to use a waterproof grease in there or else it just washes out.Ford recommends "premium long life grease" part no. xg-1-c or xg-1-t or xg-1-k.Ford spec.ESA-M1C75-B

Maybe that's the problem, I've been letting the dealer do it!

didn't the dealer give u a warranty with the new part and service, cause they gave me a warranty on parts i bought and had them install, was like a yr or something, so if only 6k miles on it, think it would be less then a year, tell them u charged me lots of money and still have the same problem, FIX IT!!!!!

Oh, I plan to just that but I was wondering about aftermarket parts of better quality/strength or a solution that hasn't been tried yet so I could go to them with it.

Ok , would this driveshaft problem , make a clunking sound slightly after movement has stopped , and almost liek a half wheel turn when traveling again????????????? and also not do it when stopping vehicle in neutral ?????

I have the exact same prob...when i m stopped at a light...a few seconds not even moving then clunk !! I always wonder where the hell this noise is coming from...seems like some body is bumping my bumper ! is that it ?

That's it.Slip yoke needs lubrication.

thanks , im gonna do a tire rotation this week , ill lube her up when i have her jacked up ... . . .. . .

thanks for the reply :bounce:

i looked once before , but couldnt find a grease fitting , where exactly do i wanna shove the lube? or do i wanna drill and tap and insert a zurk fitting ?

I have an 01 Sport but I would think both vehicles are about the same. You need to get grease inside the boot on that slip joint. The guy that did mine had a needle like grease gun nozzle and he was able to insert in in the boot without removing it.If you do a search here you might get more solutions than I am giving you.It is a common occurence.
