admittedly i know nothing about the awd system, but way can't he just turn the front wheels to get the front yoke to line up?

Put in neutral with wheels on the ground and chocked. Simply turn the TC slowly by hand until it lines up.

AWD is basically a limited slip differential from front to back. So long as the fluid is cold and the trans is in neutral the front and rear will turn independently of each other.
