Been up to blueka's today to collect my front seats (Thanks again mate)
On the way back one of my Drive Shafts started clunking real bad
and grinding.
My question is anybody know where we can get a drive shaft from and how much.

Thanks

There's some brand new ones on ebay at the moment, in the UK.

I've just changed the complete front hub, $245 including shipping, and the damn thing still grinds horribly.

Can I just take the front halfshafts off and run without them? I don't know whether this noise is from the front diff, front diff output bearings or the cv joints, but I need the vehicle - 2wd would be better than nothing!

Any ideas?

Stranger still.

Running the car on axle stands (not recommended!) the right hand front wheel has a real kick; taking the wheel off the disc appears to be very warped and rubbing against the pads to the extent that it moves the caliper.

I think I can detect a little movement in the shaft as well, but who knows?

We are going to try skimming the disc to see if it makes any difference.

Check that the inside face of the disk and the outside face of the shaft are free from lumps of rust. This can cause the disk to not sit flat on the shaft.

The disc has been on and off so much I don't think it could have time to rust! But I'll check it anyway, anything to be free of this vibration...

Weird that the mechanic thinks it may be down to fording deep water with hot discs. After abusing seven different Land Rovers and Discoverys I never had to change a disc.

I speak from experience. Last time I rotated my tyres I had quite a vibration from the front. On close look behind the discs I found just enough rust had dropped down and been crushed solid as I did up the lug nuts. After a good scrape with a screwdriver all was well again. It was quite firmly stuck to the inside of the disc.

A cheap fix - that would make a nice change. I'm running out, scewdriver in hand...

No cheap fix :-(

The hub runs true without the drive shaft attached, but starts bucking with it. There was a little accumulated crud behind the disk, but it seems it wasn't the root of the problem.

We're swapping the driveshafts left and right to see if we can replicate the problem.

Where can I get another drive shaft..?

Sorry to hear that, but it was worth a look. Unfortunately you can't swap left and right as they are different lengths.

Bugger. Again.

Does anyone have a front right hand (offside) driveshaft? Could collect if it's somewhere south of Nottingham that isn't Cornwall! Actually my long suffering father could...

Have you had a look thru ebay, there are usually plenty of sadly departed Ex's being broken for spare

drive shafts

i have several front drive shafts and iam in fareham nr to southampton . pm me. cheers chris

Finally...!

Well, my 'new' rear axle, front drive shafts and discs have made it down to Morocco in the back of my dad's Explorer.

Happily, swapping the back axle has eliminated 90% of the noise. Next on the list are the front discs.

Thanks Chris. We'll be back for more bits and bobs - especially after having both cars deep in the dunes at Merzouga - they really are the business in sand!
