OK, I have spent some time searching for this problem, and have found some answers but thought I'd see if anyone here has successfully solved a similar problem.

Our 2002 Explorer V6 has difficulty engaging gears when it's cold. When you shift into drive it takes a few seconds for it to engage. Once it does and you drive it around, it's just fine. In the summertime, it's just fine. I am in the process of selling this to my nephew for a good price, but of course don't want to pass on a bucket of problems to him either.

What I have found so far for possibilities:

1. Low tranny fluid.
2. Bad O-rings in the tranny?
3. Bad solenoid pack.
4. ?

Anyone else had a similar problem? If so, what did this set you back?

We sold the car for only $4k, so if I have to put $2k into it to pass it along I will be bumming. $500 I could live with.

Thanks!

wrong transmission fluid maybe...i would check if its low or too full first

Ford has seen fit to make sure there is no dipstick. I'll crawl underneath and check the fluid once I figure out how to do that.
