I'd like to "waterproof" my drive train. I have extended both axle vents and the tranny/transfer case vents. My question is the metal tube that comes down on the left side of the tranny, do I need to do anything with that? Thanks in advance.

Believe thats your transmission dipstick tube. It should have an o-ring on it but.....If you want to be 100% sure its water proof, I guess you could take it out and put some silicone or gasket maker on it and re-install it.

What did you use to extend your diff and t-case vents? Is it a standard size at the parts store? This is something I would like to do before i go wheeling....and after seeing the pictures, maybe even a snorkel lol!

Adam.

Hey adam,

No, I'm not talking about the dipstick tube. I've had that out before and the o-ring is there, but the silicone is a good idea I didn't think of that. I'm talking about the metal line about the size of the lines going to the radiator, that hangs down on the side of the tranny. It's end is open and after what happened to 05fronty's tranny last weekend I just want to be sure. The vent lines I got at NAPA. I don''t remember the size, I took the one on the rear axle off and matched the size. I got like 15 ft and brought the rear up into the space behind the left tail light and the front up into the engine bay along with the tranny/t-case vent.

Hmmmm. Been awhile since I poked around the transmission. I seem to remember when i swapped the trans on my former 96 sport a few years back it had some sort of metal tubing coming out the top for the vent. But other than that and the trans cooler lines to the radiator, and of course dipstick, I cant think of anything.

I'm with you on the drivetrain waterproofing as well after seeing what went on with all that water!

My short list before wheeling:
-Install front shaft (duh)
-Shackles and TT
-Silicone/gasketmaker trans and oil dipsticks
-extend all vent lines
-Possibly a locker in the rear

Eventual List:
-3 inch body lift
-33's
-exhaust
-chip/tune

The TC and the trans vents are connected together and then connected to that metal tube at the back of the trans. The tube runs forward on the top, to the trans front, makes a U turn and then down the left side, there are 2 holes in the tube near where it makes the U turn. Disconnecting it at the rear and extending the vents upward would be best. The tube needs to go thru the floor and to the top of the console to be higher than it already is.

Thanks for the info PopRichie77. I picked up 10' of hose today and I'm going to extend that vent up into the engine bay. I found out quite by accident that the little barbed fittings on the axle tubes for the vents are threaded in. When I was extending the rear vent the fitting almost fell off in my hand. I got a little worried that it might have stripped out but after closer inspection it was fine. A little thread sealer and she's just fine. Also found out that the check valve that you used to see on the end of the vent tubes is now in the axle fitting, at least in the rear one. I guess that's why the end of the tube is open.(thought I lost my check valve)

Hey Al. I just checked my spare transmissions (5r and a 4r) they both have that tube. Its a vent. It comes from the top rear of the trans (right in front of the t-case extension), runs up to the top left trans bolt (as viewed from the rear- 11 o'clock), then runs down the driverside of the trans.

Nevermind PopRichie already told you that.

Thanks, Kevin. I'm going to disconnect that tube and run them up into the engine bay, up high by the brake booster. That last ride I was on one of the guyended up with strawberry milk in his tranny and I would like to avoid that if possible.
