Hey
Ok, my 96 4.0 4x4 w/ 89 k started to make an intermittent metallic clunking sound last night. Seems to occur at slow speeds, 15-25 mph. Occurs after a bump in the road. Very harsh and metalic sound. Does not happen when I am turning, only driving straight on.
The sound feels like and sounds like its coming from directly under the drivers feet. The sound is not connected to the engine speed, but seems to be proportionate with vehicle speed. 15-25, it occurs every 3-4 seconds, if it occurs. I did this twice this morning, but stopped on the third try.
Any ideas??!! I brought it to my local transmission shop here in Mpls. They are saying that its a common issue with the 95-97 4.0's. THey've started to take a look in the transfer case. Want to do a shift fork, chain, and "shift collar" overhaul. They say CVs and U joints look ok.
BUT, I suspect that they are a bit unsure because they also are saying that the front drive axle, the one from the transfer case to the front diff, does not feel right and want to send it to the machine shop to see if it needs to be rebuilt. Plus, the oil seal on the front diff to the drive line is seeping and they want to replace.
I've not been able to find similar cases on EF.
