I have a 98 Sport with about 68,000 miles on it. Auto tranny, auto 4x4. About a week ago, I started to notice a strange driveline noise. It is a whine/whirring sound at all speeds. It does vary according to speed. Almost similar to a noisy set of bias ply tires on pavement. I swapped tires with a buddy and it did not change, so it is not tire related. Could this be a bad bearing? Transfer case? Transmission?

The transmission shifts great, fluid is full, not burnt. I checked the rear diff, front diff and transfer case fluid levels. All were OK.

Thanks,
Mjs

Which engine?

I 'd say check your driveshaft U-joints for play.

4.0 SOHC engine. It actually only has 25K on the engine. It was replaces at 43K for the piston slap problem.

I already checked U joints, shaft, etc.

I know this is an old post, but i seem to have the same problem. I have a 98'. I"m not really sure where or what to check for the niose, but I"ve rotated the tires, changed ALL the bushings, new balljoints and checked the bearings/hubs...so what woudl it be. I have no checked the u-joints or driveshaft...how do i do this?
