Drivers Rear Window Motor Replacement help??

Hey everyone..... Got an 02' XLT with what sounds like a common rear window problem. What I need help with is replacing the window motor. I have got the panel off, I have the replacement motor. The more I read though I am wondering if I might need the regulator as well. The window will slide up and down on is own at the moment, is that what it is supposed to be doing?? Should I have picked up the regulator as well. I am an accomplished backyard mechanic but have never worked on a windows insides before!! Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem with my 2002 XLT, same window. I replaced the motor a few years ago, but the problem returned. I think the replacement parts are different now, which requires additional hardware. This link may help...

Did you buy the replacement motor from a Ford dealer? What is the part number of the replacement motor you have?

Looking at the online parts catalog, there seems to be two parts listed, both may be the same part number as the cost is similar, both require a core charge.
