I have a 2005 Explorer Limited Auto/AWD. The Explorer as 43,000 street driven miles on it. I have had it for a little over 2 years. About a month ago, while making a left turn on a steep incline, I noticed a rumbling sound coming from underneath the vehicle. Having had several older model 4 WD's - it almost sounded like the noise that would be generated when attempting to drive the older manuel transmission models on a dry road (right before the dreaded "wrap-up"). Immediately, I took the vehicle into a gravel parking lot to relieve what I thought was wrap-up, tired backing up, selecting different positions in the trans/transfer case (4 auto, 4 WD, etc). Nothing made a difference - drive the vehicle home. Next day the noise went away - only to return a few days later. I took it to my local independent shop, they tried front wheel bearings (made no difference), opened the front rear and replaced the carrier bearings (which were bad after 43K?). Noise is still there - several other local shops have stopped to look at it - everyone is at a loss. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Almost broke and still have the noise.
