I'm new here, great forum....lots of good info!
I have a '98 Explorer 4.0 SOHC 4x4 @ 118k miles.
I love the power of the SOHC 4.0 - but I do have the timing chain rattle. I did replace the tensioner at about 90k (just the screw in tensioner into the valve covers) while I replaced the intake gaskets due to a problem idling when cold. Since I don't know if its just the front chain tensioner guides or both front and back, I think I'll just leave it be and hope the damn thing doesn't just quit on me....if I knew it was the front only, i wouldn't mind replacing them, but the thought of removing the engine for the rear just pisses me off.
Now to the latest issue......
The other day I started noticing a "whine" after 5MPH and heard it increase in pitch (not volume, just pitch) through about 45MPH at which point road noise overcame it. It sounds ALMOST IDENTICAL to the 1st gear whirring/whine that most of these ford auto transmissions exhibit (I have the 5R55E as most do). The difference is, this sound does not go away after a shift from 1st. I put the transmission in neutral and shut the engine off and rolled down a hill. Sound is still there. Rear diffs and transfer case all have fluid. I'm wondering if it could be bearings or perhaps something else. Any ideas would be appreciated.
