Seeing that the a stock 92 X has a measly 160hp, I know many of you are going to V8, but what about a Yamaha built SHO engine?

Rated at 220hp, 200 Ft. lbs or tourqe, thats a pretty big jump, and mabye i'm not looking at it right, but would seem like an easier swap.

put in your 2cents

it has been discussed before and the concensus is that there was a lot of custum fab work needing to be done and a lot of time and money..... a v-8 swap would probably be cheaper/faster

Arent the Tarus motors installed sideways.....( for FWD cars) ?????

good idea

sounds good, id do it if i could find out how, im going to ask around, maybe we can figure out.

id do it

id do it if you could

I wouldn't, fwd engine for a rwd vehicle!? A 302 is perfect engine and it is like Lego, this is my opinion though. Yamaha in a Ford.

There are lots of people out there that use the Yahmaha SHO motor for swaps, they usually go into custom cars, or kit cars.

Now the SHo engine is not really suited for hauling around a Explorer. For the $$$ it isnt worth your time and effort. You are talking about a complete custom setup with custom transmission adapters, complete fabrication.

I would not even think about this conversion, for 1/2 the time and 1/2 the money you can do the 5.0L.

Also people never seem to bring up the 2.3L T swap anymore, this is an excellent option for people not wanting V8 fuel mileage but looking for V8 power. The SVO 2.3L T can make an easy 300HP, and it doesnt take much to drop one in a Ranger/BII/or Explorer since the 2.3L already came in there....(Ranger and some early BII's)

If it were any SHO engine, I'd use a V8 and wait until the 4.0 stroker kit comes out. (Approx 300hp/270ft/lbs) The V6 is powerful, but it doesn't, or the V8 for that matter, make it's power until the upper RPMs. There's somebody putting an a V8 SHO engine in a Cobra replica so nothings impossible, it's just how much money you want to spend. These also aren't the cheapest engines to fix, V6 or V8. It would be different, but not ever economical.

Godfather could you tell me more about the stroker kit?

I guess the SHOShop was working on a 4.0 stroker kit that was suppose to be released awhile back. Last I heard they were still working on it. I've ordered a couple things from the SHOShop and the quality isn't really that good. I could have built my bypass pipe from them in 8th grade metal class. I hope their engine work is better than their welding skills because I'm going to be one of the first ones to buy a stroker. I guess Ford Performance Specialists built a 3.0 stroker for the 2.5L engine that puts out a lot of power so hopefully they'll build stroker for the V8 too so i can buy it from them instead. I have a racing tranny in my SHO from FPS and it's incredible. It shifts so hard and fast it jolts you in the seat. I can't wait to take it to Watkins Glen over the summer. The big problem with performance parts is the number of V8 SHOs, only 18000. There is a demand for an aftermarket, but not enough total people to produce many products. Added to that most mechanics won't even touch one.

One of the people at my school who lives a few houses down from me has a 2.3L T from a Thunderbird Turbo coupe in his Ranger... Right now he's only running 8 or 9 pounds of boost because he just completed the swap, but that ranger is fast. Apparently those motors have a very strong bottom end and there are others running 20+ pounds of boost...

Yeah I never tought about a turbo 4cyl. my vehicle before my X was a Saab 900 Turbo, and that car was awsome, i still have it, and some day wish to make it a SCCA race car, thanks for the feed back, someday I will do an engine swap, when the v6 goes out, I will replace with more power.

I hate selling my old stuff (i.e. still have saab) I figure if all else fails some day, i'll gut the whole thing and my once nice leather clad X will be a mean mudd machine.

I have an 87 Grand National at home and let me tell you - a little motor with a turbo can move just about anything. And, it's real easy to make them go even faster. I say go with a 2.3 Turbo. Less weight, better mielage, and 300 hp is way too easy to get to for little money.

A 2.3L Turbo engine is more expensive, if blown than a 5.0L. Sure it is lighter, but parts are more expensive all the way around as compared to the tried and true 5.0L. If bottom end is what you want go with 4.9L straight six out of an F-150. While it only produces about 150HP stock, it generates about 275ft-lbs of torque. Torque is what makes the world go around!

My .02

Actually, the 89-91 SHO 3.0L Tarus motor would drop into an Explorer rather easily.

All you would need is the tranny (2wd or 4wd) from a Ranger with a 3.0L motor (same engine-to-tranny bolt pattern). If you have 4wd, then you can just bolt your current t-case to the 4wd 3.0L tranny and be done.

The largest amount of work will come from the wiring. If you are really serious about the swap and intimidated by the wiring, email me and I can put you in touch with someone who can help you out.

A 5.0L swap is just dandy, but it will probably be just as expensive as any other motor (other than what you got in there now, 4.0L) swap unless you are getting many of the parts for free.

You can also get a 2.3 T from a 85-89 Merkur XR4Ti, they're really cheap cars to get used and suposedly the 2.3 T can put out some crazy power (I've seen some rated at well over 300HP). My best friend drives an XR4Ti so I'm always getting an earfull about how great of a motor it is.
Back to the SHO question, there are some guys in Brooklyn (PM Motorsports) who do work on Merkurs and they're in the process of stuffing one of those SHO V6s in a Merkur (which is rear wheel drive btw, so it's not transverse mount) but the kicker is that they've got twin turbos for it. If you could get a twin turbo DOHC SHO in an X, that would be pretty sweet, especially if you got big blow off valves so everytime you change gears you get the loud "pshhh!"

just my $0.02

it should not be that hard of a swap i am gonna build Troll a turbo sho ranger daily driver either that or a stroker markVIII. i have done a lot of research and it is gonna be pretty easy. the 3.4 V8 sho motor is a difrent beast all to gether.

Turbo lag in a mud hole doesn't sound like too much fun
