I am planning on lifting my explorer with a 3" body lift and 4" suspension. So with the gap being between the bumper and the exhaust pipes, I was planning on cutting off the tail pipes. Just behind the muffler really. I'm keeping the muffler and all, but I just don't want that gap, and I really don't want the chrome tips anymore. I didn't like the way they were from the side. But my question is, Will the sound change at all? Louder? Crappier? I just want to get an idea of what to expect if I cut it. I don't want to cut the 40 series off, and run w/o a muffler, cause I don't think an Explorer 4.0 SOHC will sound good at all. Thanks for any responses.

I cut mine back, just behind the axle, after my BL. Didn't sound any different (that I noticed, at least). :D

Ask a VA Inspector, they get a little testy when you mess with the exhaust.

Most places will not pass inspection if its cut under a passanger cabin.

i'm not worried about inspection. I am a state-inspector! The perks of working at an auto repair shop!
