Hi all!
There's a problem with my F-250's rear gas tank that I would like hear what you think it might be.

The truck runs on the front gas tank just fine, but when you switch to the rear tank it sputters when you press on the gas pedal. It will idle on the rear tank, you just can't accellerate on it. And the wierdest thing about it is it does it IMMEDIATELY after you switch to the rear tank! It doesn't take a second or two to start running lousy, it's BANG! as soon as you fip the tank selector switch on the dash!

It has me thinking maybe the fuel tank selector switch may not be switching power to the rear in-tank fuel pump! The sending unit in the rear tank works, so I'd be really surprized if it was in the wiring going to the pump/sending unit Assy.....

Any thoughts?

Jim

Not knowing the year of the F250, it may be a kinked fuel line leading from the rear tank. As soon as you switch the tanks, if there is a restriction the back pressure will be immediate. Idle takes less fuel, but when you accel the flow is greater and the restriction in the line is starving the engine. Since it does idle and not run out of gas it sound like the valve is working or maybe partially working (clogged) allowing some gas to flow from the rear tank. I would look for kinks in any of the fuel line leading from the rear tank especially any metal lines first.

Hey Jim, not really related but sort of, I have seen a few HWY patrol TV shows where guys use the second gas tank as a good drug stash. They cut a hole in it , pack it full of bags of dummy dust and think they are on their way, until a smart cop notices something. Just thought I'd let ya know, so if you cant fix that problem, maybe you could start dealing drugs with the extra tank bud.

Hi Jim
You and I have the name initials! Cool! The F-250 is a 1991 model year. I will do what you suggest and try to follow the fuel line from the rear tank and see if I can find any damage to it! Thanks!

I'd rather use it for gasoline rather than transporting drugs! Besides, no self respecting drug dealer would buy from such a old fart like me! LOL!! :)

I think I found my car hauler trailer today! It's a 18 foot Heavy duty trailer made by Dressen Trailers! 12000GVW, 16in wheels on tandem axles (YES! The bolt pattern matches my F-250 rims!!! WHoo-Hoo!!!) so I can interchange the spare tire either for the truck or the trailer! Dual electric brakes on both axles!

I'll let you guys know what I find out with the fuel line inspection!

Jim
