The dealer has replaced the gas cap and the purge valve on my 2004 explorer. I start to pump gas into the tank and the gas pump stops after every gallon entered as if I had air in the tank. Has anyone had this problem or know the cause.

Im not as knowledgeable as others but Ive had the same problem and I found it was the gas station or the pump itself....

I have tried several different gas stations with the same result. This is making make service engine light come on.

This sounds like the fuel tank vent tube is kinked or clogged with a spider nest, so that when filling the air displaced by the entering fuel cannot escape.

do the pumps have a vapor recovery sleeve on them?? if so, pull back the sleeve when pumping and see if that helps.

what is the code for the check engine light??
