So on the 97 the light comes on when braking hard. I cant check it since i'm at school. My gf says the fluid is just a hair below max. What all causes the light to come on?

I have had a hell of the time with the brakes. First the front pads where worn and had a caliper drag on the front passenger. I replaced all that.

Then the rears went and at the time all i could get was the super cheap pads from advance. Well a week later i started getting a horrible nails on chalk board sound when light braking and more when turning while braking. I have rebuilt the parking brake and it didnt help. I have pulled the rear calipers off several times and cant find anything wrong. I'm starting think the rear pads are crappy causing this noise. I know its coming from the rear passenger. Any ideas? Sorry for the long post. Thanks guys.

Man no one knows what causes the brake light besides the parking brake and low fluid?

Possibly a leak from the brake booster?...My 99's brake light came on at random and it was due to a leak between the master cylinder and the brake booster.

That could be a possibility. I'll check it thanks. Any more ideas?

It has to be fluid sensor/level in master cylinder, e brake switch is bad or wiring concern. I wouldnt go by what girlfriend said and would look at level myself.

I would have to say either the e-brake is one click down and is engaged, the low level sensor is bad or you have no brake fluid. Theres only 3 things that will really make that thing go off unless you have a broken wire.

She changed the alternator by herself so i trust her to check the fluid. She claims it to be full. I'll check it soon as I get a chance to go back home.

So if those are the three things that trigger the light how can I test the switches with multi meter?

It probably has something to do with the sticking caliper. She is telling me it random feels like the brake are on for a few seconds and then it goes away. I think its the rear passenger caliper. I've changed everything possible back there and it was squealing bad back there randomly when braking.
