im new here and i noticed my other thread got read alot but no one wrote back so obviously it wasnt a good post, so i decided to do research on my own so i could make it easier on ual, i prolly should have done that first but heres my new post, im wanting a sport trac and from ive read that if your buying from 01 to 05 that you should try to stick to alteast 03 and up but around me theirs mostly jus 01 and 02's so i guess ill just stick to gettin whatever i can get the best deal on thats in good shape and all. it has to be 4x4 and im wanting the xlt trim so how much do youall think a 02 or 03 like this would run with say like 80,000 to 100,000 miles on it, and anything i should watch for

I forget what year the independant rear suspension came out (IRS), but I'd stay away from that. The solid rear axle is a lot more dependable and has had a strong reliable run since the first generation Explorer (1991).

It would be much easier to read if the entire post was not one sentance.

i noticed most of you all have said its better to try and stay away from the 01 and 02 due to the fact that they fixed some of the minor problems that occured with the transmission and other parts. but their still a huge amount that have the 01 and 02 models. around me their isnt alot of 03 thru 05's, only 01 and 02's and even some of them are overpriced by lots. but would it be better to buy on of those in cash and have some money left over with around 90 to 100,000 miles or try to find one thats newer and pay payments on it.

Some of the common problems are front end components. Upper and lower balljoints, tie rod ends. I wouldn't expect many problems if the vehicle is stock but you should have a good look at them. If the shocks are stock, you will probably want to replace them. Timing chain tensioners in some of the SOHC 4.0L engines had problems, listen for timing chain rattles especially when it is cold. Make sure the transmission shifts smoothly. There is a common 2-3 shift flare where the rpms will raise for a second shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. Make sure the electric 4x4 works. There are no hubs, just an electric motor in the transfer case. But it seems like so many people around here never use 4x4 so make sure you check it out. Otherwise just look out for normal things you would on any used vehicle.
