Every so often I get this noise around 30 MPH under light-moderate acceleration--an extra high pitched buzz. I can also hear it when the car hits high RPMs such as on a WOT run.

Any thoughts? Inevitably it will go to the dealer, but I want to rule out anything simple first.

Could be the plastic cowl, below the windshield. It's one of several "known" issues that affects some EXs.

Ooh, good catch. I'll do some searching. Thanks!

I've listened 5 times and can't hear anything.

For those who have "taped" the cowl down, where on the cowl did they make their temporary adjustments?

Stopped in to my Friendly Local Ford Dealer and the Tech snuck out for a quick test ride with me. He heard the noise, and didn't think it was anything to do with the cowl/a-pillar issues of other Explorers.

Appointment next Wednesday, I'll post back with the resolution.

Hey Franchise,

I bought 2017 explorer Base 4Wd V4 EcoBoost model last friday 07/15/2016. on my way home, i heard the same noise at the same moment. aound 30-40mph around 1500-1800 rpm. I hear the same exact noise. I dropped off my car yesterday. its going in today. Please update what you find. I will do mine here. Does the new car smell sweat? under the hood?
Thanks.

It's with the dealer as we speak, will post back...

"Does the new car smell sweat under the hood?" Not sure what you're asking... if there is an underhood smell, there was for a time I think. Pretty sure it's the plastics burning in. It does go away. Give it a few hundred-1000 miles.

The smell like a paper burn or something sweet. I told them to check that out too. This is my First New car and its kinda frustrating. thanks

Welcome to the Forum.
It would be very helpful if you added the 'trim' level (Base, XLT, etc.) of the Explorer to your profile so it always shows in the margin when you post. At certain times it would help the members in providing the correct info in replies to any future posts since not all trims are the same. Thanks.

Peter

I got my car back.
They tested with computer plugged and found nothing wrong.
I drove with the mechanic for 10 min tried to manipluate the situation but you know. Nothing happened. So i got out.
On my way back to the work, uphill 30mph 1500 rpm there goes that sound again.
I will have to figure out when that makes sound.
Let me know Franchise what causing the noise.
Thanks

They tried and tried, and heard it, but couldn't pinpoint it. They drove it quite a bit and threw it up on the rack over and over again after every tweak.

The car has to go back in next week for the a/c and heated seat module replacements. They are going to take another shot at it then.

Praying for a TSB.

Thanks for the update.
I hope they find the issue.
What is TSB ?

A TSB gives a dealer an additional guidance for a symptom and repair steps.

For example, a TSB for our problem might state a symptom:

"HIGH PITCHED BUZZ FROM 30-40 MPH, 2.3L ECOBOOST"

A diagnostic track or pinpoint test to focus efforts:

"Check [Part of Concern] for [Potential Failure Mode]," with further instructions on how to perform the diagnosis,

And, finally, a repair solution if the diagnosis correctly isolates the problem part(s), including the labor times, part numbers, etc., that must be claimed to be reimbursed for a warrantable repair.

Got it back today but we're still stuck on this.

@jaelee0618, have you gotten your car into the dealer yet? If these problems get logged often enough it'll probably trigger someone's attention in Michigan if our dealers can't crack it.

Could also be your side mirrors.
Fold your mirrors in, drive around at those speeds and see if you still hear the noise.

A member on here (including myself) are hearing high pitch noises from our side mirrors as the air is passing through the gap between mirror housing and top cap.
I didn't get mine "fixed" yes, as I'm not happy with them applying a silicone sealant in the gap and will come up with a better resolution myself.

I will have to figure out the positions.
