EEC fuse blowing

I have read the other post concerning this and I have narrowed the problem with the 3 prong plug going to the tranny.

See the fuse blowed and the fuel pump quit working. Without knowing the fuse was blown I replaced the fuel pump. New pump no work. I found the blown EEC fuse replaced it then, blowed again. Unhooked all connections under the hood still blowing fuse. Rehooked all connection and proceeded to tranny. Its the A4LD. I can hook every connection but the 3 prong one up on the tranny and the truck will run, "have to cross solenoid over" to turn engine over.

But what does this 3 prong plug go to? I have read solenoids or TCC. Which is it?

Please help.

just a quick note, I can ground 2 of the wires and the fuel pump will come on, I can also jump the 2 wires over to the plug to the tranny and all is good, its the hot wire that is causing the blowing of the EEC fuse.

The plug has 2 ground wires which are working as of now, but the hot wire on contact with the plug on the tranny is immediatly blowing the fuse, thus causing lack of power to the fuel pump.
 






You didn't say which year your Explorer is. For a 92, there is a TCC solenoid (locks up Torque Converter when PCM commands) and there is a 3 - 4 shift solenoid (OD).

If you go to autozone.com, there are online repair manuals (a copy of the Chilton manual) and you can see a wiring diagram to help you figure out which wire is causing the problem. I think that a shorted TCC solenoid is a common problem on these transmissions.
 






The internal harness could short to the case or the pan. There is a 12 VDC source going into the 3 prong plug with 2 other wires which are not a constant ground. One wire is V (+) while the other 2 wires are grounded when the PCM sends a ground to them. The internal solenoids (TCC & OD) should read about 25-40 ohms each.
 






thanks for the replys. Should have said it is a Ford Ranger 1993 model, A4LD tranny.

Got a quote on the 2 solinoids, they run about 325 for both of them from a dealer, local part stores say dealer item also. Would it be wise to go ahead and replace both of them?

The ranger has 357,000 miles on it. I had the tranny rebuilt last year, but I did not buy new solenoids, they were reused.
 












You have got to be kidding. My quote from dealer was 325.00 for both and that site has both for less than 30.00. My goodness, Thanks so much. You guys are the BEST. Really appreciated.
 






I paid about $40-45 before I knew about that site. You could thank James in Hawaii for telling us about them. Even a local transmission parts house wouldn't be even half as much as that dealer.
 












Yup, I think I will replace the case connections when I go into it. I pulled the wiring harness from the transmission today and checked connections and wiring. Nothing found, must be internal. Tranny was acting up for a bit with sloppy shifting so I am leaning toward a solenoid. At that place I can replace all the solenoids and the wiring harness for less than 100. Maybe the old truck will haul some more livestock feed once again.
 






I am also seeing 3 solenoids offered,

1 lockup
1 3 to 4
1 torque converter

Are all these solinoids in my valve body. Seems I only recall 2 running off this 3 prong plug. The torque converter solenoid they offer is a larger solenoid than the others.


Which two runs off this 3 prong plug?
 






I think TCC (torque converter clutch) and lockup are the same thing. The TCC 'locks' the torque converter to the flywheel when activated by the solenoid. The schematic shows just the TCC and the 3-4 shift solenoid.

Im going to order the solenoids and harness tommorrow, I figure I will just replace it all at one wack cause it does have alot of milage on it. I will post results when I get it put back together, Thanks again for all the advice.
