EEC IV code 332 help

Let me run this by a few of you and can you please let me know what you think. The exploder runs fine and after driving it for about 10 mins the check engine light comes on and stays on continually. When I was pulling the codes from it I started it and stepped on the throttle and brought the rpm's up to 2000 (it was driver 30 mins before) about after a minute the rpm's droped to 1500 and the check engine light came on. The hard codes checked out with no problems found I pulled a memory code 332 from it. EGR did not open/respond during test or if memory code, did not open intermittantly. Does this mean I have to replace the egr valve? Your help is always appreciated.

Do you know how long that code has been sitting there? You shouldn't have to replace the EGR.

What engine modifications have you made?
Auto or manual trans?

EEC IV code 332

KOEO (Key off engine off): EGR Closed-valve voltage higher than expected.

KOER (key on engine on): Insufficient EGR flow detected

My knee jerk reaction is to say - clean the EGR valve. You must clean it very well, both the valve and the seat in the manifold. The surfaces (metal) must be clean around their full circumference or there will be an exhaust air leak, an the error code may be generated. Use degreaser / solvent. Do NOT clean with sandpaper or abrasives.

Make sure that your EGR gasket is good and tighten the EGR down properly. MAke sure the vacume lines are hooked up properly and that ther are no vacume leaks.

Regarding your Idle:
With your low idle at 1500 RPM there is something else wrong. This is way high for low idle, it should drop to 1000 rpm or lower (I like mine set below 1000 rpm, but this setting depends upon other modifications you may have made. 1000 rpm is good for stock engines to get proper throttle response).

The way you describe the throttle response at idle I would be very suspecious of the throttle body, throttle linkage / idle adjust, and the ISC (Idle Speed Control).

It is possible that one or all of these components need to be cleaned.

Do you perform your own tune-ups?
What was the last thing you did, and when?

For fast idle troubles, diagnose in this order:
1) check fuel / throttle body (Idle Air flow (ISC), throttle plate, linkage, idle adjust screw)

2) Check vacume distribution (check for vacume leaks - disconnected or leaking vacume line: EGR, brake, and A/C control)

3) Check Air intake system (inspect and clean the air tube, INtake manifold gaskets (all of them), air leak around injector O rings, MAS air meter (clean it as per instructions on this board).

4) Check Cooling system (are you overheating,or running at a higher engine temp. than usual, check, clean (flush), replace fluid as needed)

5) Air Conditioning System check (Is the A/C clutch, pressure switch working properly. Sometimes the A/C clutch is "over active" causing high idle.

6) finally- Ignition check (Is the base timing plus advance set properly, and idle adjust setting)
 






You should also check your PFE (pressure feedback sensor) for crud in the hoses. If there is crud in the hoses, replace it. Its the little silver box(about 4" x 3" x 1") just above your EGR with 2 vacuum hoses and an electrical conection coming off it. I went through this a few months ago,replaced egr,cleaned everything and CEL still came on. It went away went I replaced the PFE. Egr valves rarely go bad. Do a search for Code 332.

Jarrett has a good call here, I forgot about the PFE (My X does not have one).

Several wrenches have mentioned this item to me as well. Sometimes a wrench gets a bad diagnoses because they use an exhaust hose hooked up to the tail pipe when they work inside. Some of these systems have a negative pressure (fan or vacume) that helps "pull" the exhaust out of the shop.

The result is that there is too much negative pressure (free flowing) exhaust that raises a fault. My wrench says that sometimes it shows up as a faulty PFE and sometimes it shows up as a faulty EGR code.

He did not seem to think that a free flowing exhaust system (headers and cat back system) would free up the exhaust system enough to cause this fault.


I looked in my fuel injection reference and sure enough the info is there. Be suspecious of a code 34 or 335 as the cause could actually be the PFE, and not the EGR.
